Telephone 2005 g55

Purchased used g55. 2005 model. Comand module screen was fried so I purchased a rebuilt one and put it in. 2008 nav update cd from ebay works great. So far so good.

I cannot however figure out the stock telephone setup. The dash display says "no telephone". There does not appear to be an adapter in the center console for any type of cradle docking system. There is a handsfree microphone grating above the windshield by the driver door in the headliner, so I imagine it is wired for handsfree operation. If there were a phone docking cradle I would purchase the bluetooth module from ebay and be done with it, but I believe those require the docking cradle, which again I appear to be lacking. I do not see any evudence of aftermarket phone equipment in the console or glove box, though there is a coiled cord going into the bottom of the upper tray in the console which does not look like it belongs where it is.

Any advice on how to get phone working with the stock comand system and bluetooth would be appreciated. My next move is to pull the upper console tray apart and figure out whether the coiled wire is connected to anything.

Dealer has been unhelpful. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,
Karl in LA

Re: Telephone 2005 g55

I've heard that the Apple Computer Company makes a cellphone. No cradle required, just a 12v cigarette lighter.

Just kidding....couldn't resist.

Re: Telephone 2005 g55

Look in your center console for the connection port. IIRC, there is a felt tray and it should lift out. Going off of memory. Don't hold me to it.

Re: Telephone 2005 g55

Yes and there's a cradle adapter for it also apparently, for the bluetooth-challenged.

OK here's what we have going on in there:

Re: Telephone 2005 g55

The square plug is for the SOS I think. It is plugged into the little wrench and "i" buttons.

Did the round cable supply the cradle originally?

Thanks

Re: Telephone 2005 g55

I can see why people shy away from the factory system. What a pain to install. I like the old factory nav/radio head unit - factory stuff always seems to be better quality than the aftermarket stuff. But getting a phone to play with it will be challenging.

Re: Telephone 2005 g55

You need the factory phone system that originally only worked with the MB branded Motorola V60 flip phone. There is a module under the seat and a few other things. The cradle would be in the center console. Several years later MB came out with a bluetooth "puck" that would replace the MB branded V60. This should work with any/most bluetooth phones. At least it did in my 2002 that I sold in late 2009. I gave the puck to another guy w/ a CLK55 and he used it until selling his car last year....guessing the new owner is probably still using it. You should be able to cobble together the parts on eBay.....but do more research first. I don't remember the exact parts you'll need. It worked really well. Much better then the aftermarket Dension POS in my 997 C4S.

RE: Telephone 2005 g55

Karl -

I believe your truck is equipped with the early D2B based Command unit for which MB offered the integrated Motorola V60 phone. They later came out with a Bluetooth "Puck" that replaced the V60 phone and which will pair with almost any Bluetooth phone. I have one in my truck and it works perfectly with my iPhone.

2005/6 were the "tweener" years in that MB was transitioning over to the MOST based Command system in all of their other cars, but the G didn't get the treatment until 2007. The G interior electronics from that period were C class hand-me-downs (actually a big bonus when it comes time to repair). Because the V60 was dead in everywhere else in the MB line, the G series got left out in the cold.

But is should still be possible to install that phone system (called UHI, or Universal Handsfree Interface in Europe or called MHI for Mobile Handsfree Interface in the US). You will need a Universal PSE, some cables/connectors, and a Bluetooth puck. Do some searching online (fleebay, etc.) and there should be selling either everything you need (recommended) or various parts to cobble together.

Here are some links that provide information:

http://www.mercupgrades.com/Mercedes+UHI+and+MHI+Phone+Cradles-arti...
http://www.wireless4mb.com/

And here are some links I found quickly for people selling parts (I have not purchased from them before):

http://www.mercedesbenzcollection.com/Mercedes-Benz-OEM-Upgrade-Sta...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Benz-V60-Bluetooth-Puck-Set-/20102...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCEDES-V60-Module-REFURBISHED-FACTORY-OEM...

Lastly, I also installed the Dension iPod adapter and it works like a charm - 160 GB iPod with an enormous music catalog on it. Despite temptation, the Dension Bluetooth add-on does not work well.

Good luck.

Re: Telephone 2005 g55

Super. Thanks for that. I had poked around a bit online and realized I have most of the wiring and a non-MOST system, but haven't pulled the passenger seat to see if I have the PSE. Will assemble the parts and tackle it some weekend.

Regards,
Karl

I agree. I really liked the old circa 2002-2003 COMMAND system in the G55. Even the CD based navigation I found to be superior to the later system that they introduced around 2007.
