I turn it on and the red light on the lever will illuminate and turn off about 10 seconds later. I took it to the dealer a few days ago and they tell me that my overhead sensor (dome light, sunroof switch) has a temperature sensor built into it that is faulty and telling my car that its a few hundred degrees out. They then said the only way to fix the heated wheel issue was to buy a new overhead console that they wanted over $600 for, after charging me to diagnose the problem. Now here's my question. I know that our dome light is also the same looking as in the c class and clk class and have found numerous good working ones on ebay that are reasonably priced. But the problem is the part number on mine begins with 463, and the ones I have found for sale begin with 209. They are both the same looking on the outside, and have the same connectors on the inside to plug in. I have posted pics of both mine and the one for sale below. I want to know if I can use the other part even though it doesn't have the same part number but looks identical to mine. EDIT: Photos removed to be resized.

At least, if it does, it won't be plug and play. My sunroof switch shorted on the unit. I bought an exact "c class" version of it, auto headlights stopped working and SOS lit up in the dash.. Also, you can't swap a single functional part from one unit to another.. I found my g unit for like $99 on eBay, it randomly popped up, checked for a few months. Good luck

I mean, I don't know the numbers, but I find more "g55" listings than "g500". Good luck

So do you think that they're pulling my leg or can a overhead console really control why my heated steering wheel is not working? Is this correct for a 1980 model ?? At least the air horns still work! Stuart

It was loaded with dust, as someone here said it might be. I cleaned the fan and the thermistor with a feather, then performed an ohm reading .997K Reinstalled the unit, its much better but still not perfect. I think I'll remove sensor in the dash area and clean that as well. If you choose to explore, do so with care, the thermistor leads are extremely thin!

In the short time it took me to install a new rubber cap, unknowingly, water collected against a couple connectors. The small white connector, for the rear view mirror, had a fair amount of blue corrosion on the terminal pins and surroundings. The shape of the dome assembly and its tilted mounting position makes a perfect water trap. Just something more to keep in mind.
