coolant: top off?

My light came on for checking the coolant. I looked into/around the reservoir and could not find the fill line. I did see what looked like a plastic divider in the middle of the reservoir. Is there a fill line? If not, how much coolant do I put in? (I did read the manual and saw the 50/50 coolant/water is required, but I did not see info about how high to fill it). Mine is a 2002. Thank you.

Re: coolant: top off?

So I read around on the net and some Mercedes sites suggested that the sensor for the coolant fluid also was used for the wiper fluid (odd). I went ahead and added wiper fluid. Sure enough, the coolant indicator went off! Don't know if it was causation or just coincidence (my indicator lights can be kind of goofy). Still would like to know how high to fill the coolant. Mine is filled up a little more than 1/2 way to the top of the container. Talked to another Mercedes owner who also could not find a fill line and his was filled was filled a little over the plastic divider to about 2 inches below the refill tube. So if you happen to check your coolant, I'd be thankful if you post a quick message about how high it is. Thank you!

Desert Fox - 12/14/2014 2:59 PM So I read around on the net and some Mercedes sites suggested that the sensor for the coolant fluid also was used for the wiper fluid (odd)....

What they meant to say was that the same sensor line is used for coolant level and wiper fluid level.  This is also done in the W210.  Each switch adds a different resistance to the line and the instrument cluster figures out which switch changed from the total resistance.  This can go out of whack when the wires corrode or get shorted by salty debris.  Or, in the case of the wiper fluid level, the plastic gets porous and  the fluid eats away at the switch itself.

Re: coolant: top off?

Talked to the dealer about how high to fill the coolant. The answer? When you stick your finger in the tube, the tip should touch the coolant. Kind of funny, actually.
