Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

I was driving today and all of a sudden I got a ABS/BAS/ESP failure message on the dash and the truck wouldn't shift past 3rd gear (limp home mode?). I shut it down and started it back up half an hour later and the shifting was back to normal but now in addition the ABS/BAS/ESP it was also showing"Electronic brake booster failure" and "Display failure" and the speedometer was stuck at 0 mph. Then the Check Engine light came on and when I got home I pulled a P0600 code from it which seems to be some kind of communication error.

I've had some similar issues in the past from going through the carwash but never a check engine light because of it. Any idea where to look for water getting stuck in the wiring or a loose connection?

RE: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

The speedometer gets its speed signal from the ABS module, so the loss of ABS and a reading of 0 on the speedometer both point to the ABS unit either going off line or disconnected from the CAN bus.

That makes sense. I've been getting the occasional ABS light on for a few seconds after some skidding around in the snow lately. At the time I thought it was normal but maybe it's related?

Re: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

Does anyone know how to unplug the big connector on the ABS/ESP module?

I've been getting the ABS/ESP/BAS warning on and off. Uusuallly comes on after driving a little bit but its not on permanently so I'm thinking it's probably just a bad connection somewhere. Would be nice to have ABS/ESP working with all this snow.

Also I think I might have a bad throttle position sensor because the truck acts weird when coasting from highway speeds down to 30mph (for EZpass booths). How much play in the throttle cable is considered normal?

RE: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

I would guess that both the ECU and TCU use road speed as part of their input.  Without the speed signal from the ABS system they are likely to act weird.

Get the ABS codes read.  It will most likely be easy from there.  If there are no stored codes.  Leave the reader on and see what the wheel sensors say as you are driving.  My bet is one of them drops to zero regularly.

Re: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

I was able to pull a pending P0500 code which indicates a wheel sensor failure but I'm not sure which. I will try to check the wiring going from the wheel sensors. I still think water got in somewhere while going through the carwash and it's been so cold the last few weeks that it hasn't had a chance to dry. Even in my garage it's barely above freezing.

Check the path of the two front wheel ABS lines.  One of mine had gotten loose and rubbed on the inside of the rim.

Re: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

So I couldn't find anything wrong with the ABS just by looking under the car. I've ordered an icarsoft i980 mercedes diagnostic scanner and will try resetting any ABS error codes with that. I figure it's cheaper than taking it to the dealer to have it looked at.

Let us know how that Carsoft scanner and software works out. I've read some negative comments about it in the past.

Re: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

I got the iCarsoft i980 scanner from Ebay over the weekend. Total cost was $145. (Note the "i" in front of Carsoft - apparently Carsoft without the "i" is a different, unrelated MB scanner company based out of the UK) .

While I waited for the scanner to arrive, I left the battery in the truck disconnected for a few days . When I hooked the battery back up today I noticed a "brake light lamp" warning on the dash and saw that the brake lights were on. I didn't have this issue before I unplugged the battery so I found that a bit odd. I read about the "brake light switch" going bad on some other forum and how a bad switch can trigger the ABS/BAS/ESP warning.

When I plugged the iCarsoft i980 in and scanned for codes, it came up with a brake light switch code and a rear left speed sensor code. So I can confirm that the i980 scanner can at least read codes that don't show up with just a regular OBD scanner.

I guess the next step will be to replace the brake light switch and then try clearing the codes.

Good news on the iCarsoft Scanner.

I had very unfortunate dealings with Carsoft software out of Belgium several years ago. Glad to hear it's working for you!

Good news on the iCarsoft Scanner.

So far it's definitely worth the price of admission. I was a bit skeptical after reading some of the reviews on various forums. Most of them said it didn't work. But considering a used Star diagnostic is around $600, I think this is a good alternative for most people.

Re: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

I put in a new brake light switch (cheap fix, only $19) but the brake lights are still on and so is the ABS/ESP/BAS warning. I'm thinking either the new switch is broken (unlikely) or it wasn't the problem to begin with (much more likely).

I successfully cleared all the codes with the i980 scanner but these two codes keep coming back. I haven't checked the fuse for the traction control unit yet, and I'm not sure what the second code (P101104) is about. Googling it turned up nothing.

Re: Speedometer showing 0 mph and DTC P0600

So I checked all 4 fuses listed under ESP and they're good. The ESP/ABS hydraulic pump (A7/3) probably needs replacing. I heard somewhere that it needs to be "programmed" by the dealer. Is this true or can I replace it myself? The dealer will probably want thousands because the pump itself is $1500. But at this point the truck is undriveable with the brake lights always on. I checked the brake light switch again to make sure I didn't plug it in backwards, but the way the connectors are shaped there is only one way to plug them in. I guess I will try re-installing the switch, maybe the plunger didn't position itself properly. I opened up the old switch and there are 3 different contact switches inside. Who knows how it works...

Is there a relay for the ESP/ABS pump somewhere?
