Oil Level Senor Leak?

Ok, finally getting around to fix the leak on my lower oil pan as I have been working on other more fun projects and wanted to get some mileage out of the oil before I drain it.

I got the MB gasket sealer from Vlad and the MB diagram on how to place the sealant on the pan, cool right.

It seems like I might have a small leak from the oil level sensor on the upper pan, not really sure bu might replace this while I am there, anyone have a exploded diagram or have any tips on how to replace this sensor.

I've done it on my 2000 G500. You have to remove the lower pan to get to it.

The hardest part is having very articulatable small hands and fingers to release the electrical contact. Let me see if I can find any WIS instructions for the job. It is a very serious pita to do.

P/N 5 in the attached diagram is the sender.

Re: Oil Level Senor Leak?

DUTCH....thanks for the quick reply. It seems like no gasket in there so it must be the same sealant used from the upper to the lower oil pan I guess.

P/N 11 in the diagram is an o-ring. Mine was leaking because dirt and grit had come down from the outside at the top, and had compromised the o-ring. A good cleaning and a new o-ring fixed the problem.

No sealant is used on that part. If you did, you'd never be able to get it out to repair things again.

These should help.

Re: Oil Level Senor Leak?

Meh...so I pulled off the oil pan and did the lower pan with the correct MB sealant, decided to not mess with the oil sensor O-ring as it seemed like the leak was coming from the lower pan. After about a week and 200 miles I see a small drip on the floor in the same location. Crawl underneath and see I still have the leak and it appears to come from the oil level sensor....since I am lazy by nature, I wonder if I try and clean the area with a straw and break clean and try and seal if from the outside with RTV...that being said I know it usually never work sealing from the outside but I will give it a shot before I pull the pan again to replace the o-ring. Anyone feel like chiming in?

Re: Oil Level Senor Leak?

Well I cleaned the crap out the sensor with some CRC grease remover and some lint free swaps, then applied a bunch of Dow 732 around the base of the sensor. Its good stuff that our mechanic use on our aircraft, I think it might work and worth a try...might help if was not running 0w-40 Mobil 1 that leaks through everything it seems right after warranties......

RE: Oil Level Senor Leak?

Here is a pic I''ll give it like 48 hours to cure, looks crappy but who cares if it works.

EDIT: Photo removed to be resized.

RE: Oil Level Senor Leak?

I hope it works because I doubt if you'll ever be able to remove and replace that sensor with all the sealant on there.

Re: Oil Level Senor Leak?

Yea, I hope works too, thanks Dutch. I don't feel like pulling the pan again for a least another 3000 miles too get my time's worth for doing the oil pan, and spending $40.00 on that special Mercedes oil pan RTV.

Re: Oil Level Senor Leak?

Well an update and a few days later and a few hundred miles and it is not leaking any more so it seems my back yard fix is holding up the moment. Now I see how long it holds up, the sealant can be removed easy, it is about the same as the sealant used on fish tanks and it kind of just peels off if removal is needed. Might not be a bad idea to grab a tube and add it to and expedition trips.
