Differential input shaft flange nut

Does anyone know if a standard 12 point deep well socket with work on the differential input shaft (bevel gear) flange nut? If so, what size?

There is some confusion as the EPC shows the four slot type nut like those used on the axles, but the WIS (and my foggy memory) shows a 12 point style (like this: http://fourbyfourclub.com/images/W463Big/W463DifferentialNut.jpg).

Thanks!!

Re: Differential input shaft flange nut

I know that the 722.7 autobox uses a 30mm 12 point nut on the output flange, You need a "deep" socket too, to cover the middle of the shaft.

RE: Differential input shaft flange nut

Thanks! I pulled the front drive shaft flange today and it turns out that a 1 1/4", 12 point SAE socket actually fits fine. I have a 32 mm and a 30 mm, but the fit was very loose on the 32 mm and no go on the 30 mm, so the size may actually be 31 mm. The shaft length is also short enough that a standard depth socket with work. BTW, I did not remove the nut - I just wanted to check that it was tight.
