G on ebay

Any thoughts on this G? Other than will probably be very slow on highway.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/281626929006?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&s...

I don't see the handles for rolling up the windows and would be nice if it was a 5-spd. Is this 4-spd / engine combo reliable?

CAVEAT EMPTOR!! There is no such thing as a 280D, and the VIN provided is for a 280GE gasoline engine. If it's had an engine swap. why not say so. The big questions here would be if the supposed swap was done competently and with which diesel engine. Note that he does not show any underhood photos, so who knows what and what condition is under there.

If it's a non-turbo 5-cylinger diesel, it's probably the OM617 300GD motor with 86 HP; and with a 4-speed auto, you ain't going nowhere fast. You'll most certainly miss your 396 HP G500.

The window crank handle is missing from the right rear door. You can see the stud for it just in front the door opening handle.

Also, those wheels are 18", not 17" as claimed. Sounds like he knows very little about what he is selling.

It was first delivered from the factory on Nov 6, 1981.

Vehicle Data Card is attached below.

Re: G on ebay

This G has been for sale for a while. I've seen it on Ebay for months now. If it was a great one, I'm sure it would have sold a while back...

RE: G on ebay

...and it's a respray.

When I am considering a vehicle purchase, one of the things I consider is the condition of the engine bay, exterior and the interior compared to each other. Have they aged about the same and been cared for about the same? They (interior and exterior) are out of sync with each other. I don't care for resprays in the case of G-Wagens because of the earlier model year corrosion issues.

Re: G on ebay

Notice the back end? What is that lamp on the rear? Nasty. Also checkout what appears to be 5th door wiring loom run along the exterior.

I wonder which ET is on those G500 wheels.

Thank you all for the great info. I didn't realize it was so difficult to find a decent one. I'll keep looking around.

The fog light and rear door wiring are standard W460 equipment.  The internal spring loaded cable for the rear door was a W463 improvement.  The bondo? Not so much.

RE: G on ebay

I exchanged emails with the guy, and he insists that it is the original 280D (no such animal) engine, even though the VIN is for a 280GE GASOLINE engined truck.

It is now sold, and I feel sorry for whoever it was that paid $15k for that thing!

weird, never seen the fog lamp like that. Mine doesn't have it.

What years of the 463 had the springg loaded cable on the exterior?

RE: G on ebay

We may see this one back on the auction block. The buyer has zero feedbacks. Could be a shill bidder. Also, the seller has not been active for greater than a year except for one item recently. Several negative feedbacks in the past. Caveat emptor.

The spring loaded cable is inside on all W463s, the cable runs outside on the W460.  The fog was an option, not standard as I said.

Re: G on ebay

spring loaded cable also in 460 starting around 1986.
On this G you see 2 cables. there is normaly only 1 for those early 460's
front fog were optional and rear was standard depending in which country you lived.

In 1984, the rear fog option code was L-18 at DM 65,--.

The front fog option codes were L-16 (clear) or L-17 (yellow) at DM190,--.

Re: G on ebay

My model year 1986 doesnt have the exterior cable. Can't remember but I think it was a late-year build. Maybe that change was made for the 87 model year?

Given the shape my interior cable is in I can understand why they made the change, but it sure is ugly.

Re: G on ebay

Don't know why you guys are so hard everytime a used G comes up for sale....
Hell it's 35 years old, what du you expect. What kind of Land Cruiser or Land Rover
can you get for this kind of money, nothing pristine for sure...been there...and the G cost
almost double new and has to be imported.
It sure isn't for the Beverly Hills croud but could fit the needs of someone who needs it
to run errands around the farm or go fishing.
It's around the price of a snowmobile or a quad bike that will depreciate to almost nothing
in 5 years.
I have a client who has a rusty, dented, dirty old G that is worth a MILLION to him.
I hope the buyer of this one enjoys it and visits this forum.

Re: G on ebay

Warren - I get where you are coming from on this, sometimes it is ok to have a truck rusting out and resprayed. It all depends on what price you are paying, what you plan to use it for and what it is worth to you. I also think that more of the issue is that things seemed to be not disclosed by the buyer or are inaccurate. This should make anyone cautious about buying from a seller. For that I am glad the the forum was able to shed some light on the vehicle origins. If someone did buy it I hope it works out for them as well.

For what I am looking for I need something to use on a farm but will also be transporting family. Cosmetics don't matter much but I need something reliable. As reliable as an old truck can be I guess. Also would like an original engine which would help with maintenance and / or troubleshooting.

I don't think anyone is being overly hard on this G. Just realistic. Many people get caught up in the glow and excitement of a special car or truck, and it's easy to overlook the real issues that cost real money to fix. And, it can take an experienced eye to see through the bright red lipstick that a sneaky seller will sometimes put on the pig.

And, if you are willing to wait, you can find nice G's for reasonable prices. I bought a beautiful 280GE SWB for only a tiny bit more than this G went for - but it was not the first 460 G that I looked at. I passed on a number of other 460's and eventually came across a very nice one for a very reasonable price after watching 460's go by for about two years.

That being said, I remember passing on another 280GE about a year prior, a LWB, that was incredibly well restored by a very OCD German car fanatic, and wishing I had not. I still think that is probably the one I should've got, although I love my SWB.

You win some, you lose some, but there are nice ones out there for reasonable prices. They are out there if you are willing to be patient.

Good post, I bought a 02 g with 28k from a zero feedback buyer, $38k then I spend more than $5000 to repair the problems, still got some problem to fix. The only thing After exciting is sad.

Re: G on ebay

I talked to that guy. His name is Paul I think. He is a tool, and not in a good sense. It's all great until you get into the specifics, and then that crate motor he is talking about turns into "I think the dealer replaced it - I will have to find the paperwork on that - not sure if I can locate it".

I don't think he would disappear with the check but I had absolutely zero confidence in anything specific he put in the ad about the vehicle, which was not the one mentioned in this thread.

There are plenty of guys in Europe who will find you a good G and put it on a boat for a fee. I would do that before I would trust this dude. For the money you save you could go to Europe and find one yourself.
