New boots on the ground.....

In preparation for an upcoming Baja Expedition,

I finally broke down, and got me some new boots for my G-wagen:

New and improved BFGoodrich 285/75 16 AT KO2's with load rating E.

Lot's of people seem to like this new tire design, and I will give it a good workout over the Easter Holiday.

Has anybody of the G-wagen crowd already got some experience with those tires?

BTW I chose the 285/75 over the 295/75 based on the load ratings, the 295's are rated "D".

Re: New boots on the ground.....

off-road D is better than E - because D is more flexible (softer sidewall) - more comfort in the rough
you could have asked, Karl

That would be true for the average Joe,

but I always have to carry a heavy load. ample supplies for my friends, for hundreds of asphalt Miles.

Also, I do enjoy the stiffer things in life, generally.

They look the goods.

And those deep side sipes look like they will make them manageable in the wet.

RE: New boots on the ground.....

I picked some up last week too - hoping to get improved packed snow/ice performance as compared to to the BFG Mud Terrains I had on my camper. That improvement shouldn't be hard to obtain.

I'm putting new G500 brakes on the camper so I had to change to 16" wheels. I'll be selling the 15"AMG wheels/tires soon.

Re: New boots on the ground.....

Had some on a truck of mine. Good tires but had 2 complaints that may not apply or bother all. 1. they don't track all that well - I guess because there aren't any radial lines but its an off-road tire so this is not a truly valid complaint. 2. off-road they do cake with mud almost instantly - I felt like anytime the ground was went I was left with slicks. Of course not everywhere has mud and in fact you may not see much mud in the life of your tires - out east mud can't be avoided (unfortunately).

RE: New boots on the ground.....

Nice pic Mike, but I can't make out the hula dancer on the dash of the 460.

Just put a new set of Commercial TA Tractions on the baby G. "Beatles Records" as Loki would say, in 215-85/16 and probably the 5th set of the same tire I've used on the G's. Thoughts turn more to MC tires this time of year. Wish my choices there were as good as for the G.

All the best,

-Dave G.

It would be good to hear the comparison between the new & old BFG AT's.

I had a set of 245 wide AT's which nearly sent me to the bush, aquaplaning at 80 km/hr. I also had a set of 235 wide MT1's which did not do this through the same puddle at the same speed on yhe same vehicle. There was for me a major difference and I never quite trusted the AT's after that and I sold them.

Now my story is hardly scientific but when I look at these new AT's They look the same except for where the water should exit the tyre sipes on the side. Much bigger. Makes me think.

I did use the "old" BFG AT's for many years, thousand of miles, but never had that aquaplaning issue.

The reason could be:

a.) my AT tires were only 295's

b.) it never rains in Southern California

c.) I hardly drive faster than 80Kmh

Re: New boots on the ground.....

I also had the "old" BFG AT's, on two different trucks, for thousand of miles - and they were excellent in all conditions. I had them in 265/75/16, and 31x10.5x15 - no aquaplaning - excellent in snow - excellent in mud, much better than I was afraid they would be - no punctures. I did have a front tire that I had three different shops try to balance, to no avail - when I had it removed, I was told there was a belt broken. Possibly from impacts at 70-75mph on the many very impressive potholes in the highways in the Northeastern US. Overall, they were a very good tire for me.

I am waiting to see how well the KO2's are liked, I'm hoping to grab a set.

Re: New boots on the ground.....

My opinion of the BFG ATs was similar Andrew, for the one and only set I ever ran. That was on my '97 Land Rover D90. They did well enough until the tread was down to approx. 50% depth, then they pretty quickly became near worthless for anything other than dry tarmac. ComTrac's at 25% tread have repeatedly performed better than AT's @ 50%. That's just my use though. Everyone's different.

All the best,

-Dave G.

I can't wait until I need a set! KO2's. Never have I been a rush for a set of tires to wear out. It's going to be a while because my set of KO's are still good, and I don't drive much, far.

Let's meet on April 4th 8:00AM at the Pep Boys in Calexico, CA. Please bring your passport, and we will work those KO's down to the belts......

RE: New boots on the ground.....

Pick up some Pacificos in Mexicali and take a break at Pete's El Paraiso just north of San Felipe. I have been there so many times over the last 30 years that they should have a palapa with a name plaque for me.

I have racked up around 250 000 km on the old BFG A/T's in 235/75/16, 265/75/16 & 285/75/16 on my 110's over the years and love em, only the 235's were in the UK there rest which are wider are all out here in Dubai were we do not get a lot of rain. Due to not being able to get them in 18's out here in Dubai I fitted a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers to my G55 & they are also very good but are showing far more wear after 40k and have not been subjected to the same side wall abuse as the BFG's on my 110, I will be up for changing the Nittos in 6-8 months and am tempted in bringing in a set of KO2's from the States.
