G500 water pump, engine vibrations etc

sounds like my water pump is going out - characteristic noise and play in fan

does anyone have a pdf for the tear down?

Would the M112 pump fit?

My guess is that the M112 pump should fit.

Email me your VIN, and I'll dig up the WIS procedure.

RE: G500 water pump

so here is an update

before my water pump went out (noise and wiggly shaft), I had noticed 2 things:
the viscous coupling on the fan was frozen
the engine would display strong vibrations

after checking all diagnostics (all values were good) and not being able to find any cause for the vibrations, I suspected the constantly running fan
especially at startup the engine would run very rough.

then the pump went out
and immediately I thought, that maybe the same harmonics killed the pump bearing

now I have replaced the pump (a job from hell with 19 bolts) and the viscous
and the engine runs a smooth as a new one
no more vibrations at all

bottom line - if your viscous is dead, do not wait a single day to replace it

RE: G500 water pump

How many miles were you at? My mechanic has noticed bearing noise on my pump @108k on my2003 G55, but my viscous coupling and fan are new, the water pump however is not. He says replace soon, but I'm wondering how long I could wait since it's just a city car for me.

RE: G500 water pump

The concern is that a bearing failure can quickly become catastrophic.  If the shaft gets out of position then the fan can tear up the radiator.  I'd fix it now.

I have the WIS running on a virtual machine but I seem to have trouble finding specific procedures like this one. Is there a step by step example of how to get there? I know a few hours of trying would probably succeed but I rarely have that luxury. Thanks for any help.

PS I just noticed the g55 idling a bit rough when cold, so thanks for this thread. There was a hint of play in the pump pulley (but not alarming) when I changed the belt. How much is too much on that item? And is that idler really as crappy as everyone says? Thx. I am only at 55k!

RE: G500 water pump

the procedure for the water pump is on the WIS - Dutch sent it to me (Thanks!)

is your fan clutch free when cold?

there should be no play in the pump shaft/bearing

the idler (and the one on the tensioner) are straight from hell
they fail without warning, leaving you stranded with an incredible mess under the hood

Re: G500 water pump, engine vibrations etc

Someone on here was selling aftermarket idlers. Who was that? Replaceable bearing.

Correct.

I believe pulley not plastic.

G55 mostly a city vehicle, never far away from a MB dealership.

Other pulley sets (different size) available for more "ummmhp"

Re: G500 water pump, engine vibrations etc

Is a plastic pulley somehow more reliable than a metal one?

The different sizes are for the crank and supercharger pulleys. Not so much the idlers.

Yes my supercharger idler is aluminum. Not sure about the one behind it.

The fan is electric so no clutch.
