Brake Rotor Screws

I am replacing my front calipers with the G500 vented ones. My question is which screw is used to hold the rotor to the hub. My existing one uses the Phillips head where the newer ones appear to use a Star. Did MB update to the Star system with the addition of the vented rotor?

Thanks
Mark

RE: Brake Rotor Screws

My 2000 G500 with the vented brake discs uses the Philips head screw like your second photo.

Re: Brake Rotor Screws

I wonder when they changed to the star with the shoulder. I have 2003 vented rotors on the way.

Thanks for the help

One way to find out would be to pick a 2003 VIN off of Ebay and enter it in the EPC to see which screw shows up.

I just did this. The newer Torx screw is used from axle R163400 onward. The 2003 on Ebay had axle R151592. Looks like you'll need the older Philips head screw.

Re: Brake Rotor Screws

Sounds good. The rotors will arrive today. So I will see if they require the shouldered star screw or the standard phillips.

thanks

RE: Brake Rotor Screws

There are 2 types of 463 vented rotors that fit under 16" wheels, early and late. The early discs (07.94 to ~2002) use the Phillips screw just like all MBZ vehicles have used since before WW2, the later discs use the star socket, the later discs will not 'properly' fit onto 460/pre2002 463 hub because the location of the "screw" hole is in the wrong place.

I have seen some aftermarket rotors featuring both Phillips and star screw hole locations.

You have 3 options if the rotors you get only have the shouldered star screw holes:
Get early discs,
drill and tap new holes in your hubs for the star screws,
or don't use any screws and expect some difficulty installing front tires with the brake disc spinning around obscuring the lug bolt holes.

Re: Brake Rotor Screws

Thanks Chris. Rotors came in, they require the phillips head screws.
