Re: G500 Vs. Cayenne GTS - Towing / Weekend Driving

I spent a few minutes measuring a couple of interest items. These are close.

G500 2000 Europa (Factory trailer hitch)
Center of axle tube to center of the receiver's hitch pin: 27"
Center of the receiver's hitch pin to the outer edge of the receiver tube: 1 7/16"
Wheelbase per internet search: 112.2"
Curb weight per internet search: 5400-5700 lbs (about)

Cayenne S 2011 (Factory trailer hitch)
Center of axle tube to center of the receiver's hitch pin: 36.5"
Center of the receiver's hitch pin to the outer edge of the receiver tube: 2 3/16"
Wheelbase per owner's manual: 113.98"
Curb weight per owner's manual: 4553-5324 lbs depends on options

Re: G500 Vs. Cayenne GTS - Towing / Weekend Driving

Those distances don't look at all close to me, apart from the wheelbase. The hitch pin on the Cayenne is like 10" further aft relative to the axle, if I am reading correctly. This puts far more of the car weight on the rear axle of the vehicle when the trailer hitch is pressing down on the hitch.

When I had the 2010 tdi I actually shortened the insert to get the ball closer to the receiver by a couple of inches. Had to mill a new pin hole in it. The way the ball mounting plate is welded to the 2" steel tube is also important; 45 degrees adds another inch. I would look for one that is 90 degrees and welded square, if possible.

The vehicle weights above are also light years apart. The 2014 touareg we have now lacks a transfer case and is 500lb lighter than the 2010. It feels much more like a car, though people seem to still tow ridiculously heavy things with the newer ones also. The G looks to be about 1000lb heavier than a Cayenne.
