Sad Day Indeed

Hello All-

I knew someday this day would come: time to let go of my 84 280 LWB G. I would, however, like to see if I can pass it along to another interested party that will use her until she is done. I am only going to sell local and for cash. I checked all the sites I am familiar with (including this one) and still can’t be sure of a target. Consequently, I am reaching out to get an idea of what she may be worth.

As some of you may know, it has been well maintained, e.g., greased and oiled regularly. The odometer says 70k and I am quite certain that is 170k. The drivetrain is strong: the 5 speed manual transmissions has less than 100k; within the past 30K I’ve rebuilt the front and rear axles; the front drive shaft has 50k; clutch is tight; and it all lockers are in perfect working order. The engine (gas) drags a little and occasionally idles high, but fires up strong every morning- even on the coldest New England winter morning. The brakes are ok (worked on professionally last August) and the frame is perfect (replaced shock seats in July). As for extras, it has a sunroof, stereo w/removable face plate, working winch, Hella fogs, and all convenience items work (washer, wipers, rear defogger, heater, etc). The aftermarket A/C is spent, but, I have all the replacement parts (including condenser). The big issues are: 1) gas tank will need to be replaced; and 2) the lower 1/3 of body has seen better days (13 New England Winters).

What do you all think I should take as an absolute minimum? As always, thanks greatly.

PS- I apologize if this is not the appropriate forum for this question.

RE: Sad Day Indeed

Let me try this. I'm thinking $6000 firm. Any thoughts as to whether or not that's at least reasonable/sane? Anyone? Pls, this is a judgement-fr zone.

Depending on how bad the body rust is, that's probably not unreasonable.

Thank you, sir; that's helpful. Rust is 5 - 6 on a 10 scale, with 10 being the absolute worse possible condition.

RE: Sad Day Indeed

post a few pics of the rust and of the things that you feel add value. There might be another answer that isn't $6k.

I have posted what are the worst rust spots- all in customary areas (e.g., rear corners and wheel wells). I removed the fenders flares some time ago to chase rust and pretty much gave up these last couple of years. The black in all pictures is por-15 rust repair paint; the jagged edges on the rear wheel well pics is not metal, put por-15 putty (just cut off rusted metal).

As for positives, as noted, rebuilt drivetrain, 8,000 lb winch (not Warn), Hella fogs, small sun roof, working stereo, after-market A/C with replace parts as part of sale, roof rack, and power windows. I have tried to include a picture of the new shock seats and the interior. As you can see the rear interior is in great shape. The front interior is also in good shape: seats have been covered w/the pictured sheepskin covers. I do not include pics of front because they need to be cleaned of the small pieces of the seat cover backing.

As always, thanks.

Sure. The sunroof is roughly 32" x 16" and not mechanical; pops up part way. No leaks, as is shown by clean head liner (all of headliner is clean). For what it's worth, I have enclosed couple pics of roof rack, Behr A/C unit, and original first aid kit (for laughs).

Re: Sad Day Indeed

Now I am real interested. I guess I just don't how to change the rust issue. How hard is it to attack rust on this vintage of trucks? What would be the right way to do it, if you wanted to fix it for good and get a good respray? How hard is it to remove the cab? How bad could it be?

Also, are there good water proof seats that might be a good replacement for the front seats?

Finally, what's a good source for detailed schematics on this truck if one wanted a project

Thanks

I bought my engine, transmission and axle manuals from Harald. He is a good guy with a huge collection of proper Mercedes manuals.

Search for user bram_r . He has a couple of good threads on what you are interested in.

If the frame doesn't have any cancer spots then body repair depends on whether you can find the patch panels from donor or aftermarket sources or if you have to fabricate the panels yourself. What kind of welder do you have? Usually on body a 110V is OK but you do want to use argon/co2 and solid wire. Flux core is possible I just don't like all the grinding and cleanup required afterward.

RE: Sad Day Indeed

So, since I'm not hearing anything one way or another, I guess I'll stick with $6,000 firm. As always, thanks for listening.
