New Battery or Alternator?

Got battery tested and yes it needs replaced but would a bad battery that isn't causing any starting problems cause for head lights to turn off and on in "auto" setting but stay on in the "on" setting be caused by a battery going bad even after the G is running? Or is that my alternator?

RE: New Battery or Alternator?

I found an end of life battery will caused the G act strange. Let start from the new battery first then determine what is next. The alternator can be tested by machine if it can output 14.xx+ volt (forgot what exactly). Then you know the alternator is in a working order.

RE: New Battery or Alternator?

When the 2002 models were introduced into the US, a number of them had multiple, seemingly unrelated, electrical issues. It was determined to be "AC Ripple". See this recent thread. http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=22158&po...

This may or may not be the issue you are facing with your 2002.

Have you replaced the battery and checked the voltage at the battery with the engine running. There is an issue known all to well to me in that one of the regulator brushes has worn down to a point that one moment it is making contact and therefore 14 volts and the next moment it is not making contact anymore and no voltage output.

A last point to consider, over time our vehicles have had there manually actuated gizmos replaced with electrically operated gizmos and many of them have integrated circuits. All of it is sensitive...they need clean and adequate electrical power. A battery on its last legs does not help.

^^
Check the battery voltage. Seems the truck needs a the voltage to be at or above 12.6v
My old battery dropped to 12.2v all hell broke loose with the electronics.
Yes your headlights may stay on manually but eventually, those too will blink on and off with the "visit workshop display"
followed by SRS, ABS, so on..
