Engine won't rev pass 4K rpm

My engine when reved up it cuts out as if running out of gas, it won't stall gut icauses it to jerk when driving.  If in parked and its rsved up it does the same thing just as if was starved for gas. Otherwise the engine runs fine, I had some trouble staring but if I start it and give it a few minutes to let the idle regulate it self then its all good and no isues.  I'm at loss at what it could be causing it tto sputter when it hit around 3900-4000 rpm's.  Any ideas as to I should check?

RE: Engine won't rev pass 4K rpm

In addition to vacuum advance (check for vacuum leaks and proper advance of the timing) I would see if the distributor has a centrifugal advance. I've look so many distributors I can't recall if it has that too. It would be inside the distributor and earlier Mercedes 280 dist sometimes had an issue with the mechanism getting corroded.

My 280GE did this same thing, wouldn't rev past 4k rpm and felt like it hitting the rev limiter. I found that the problem was ignition module, simple to change. Hope this helps you.

Re: Engine won't rev pass 4K rpm

Thanks for the input and this weekend I'll be changing the fuel filter and do a tranny oil change and filter. I'd like to change the TC oil as well but not entirely sure yet of which to use. I've looked for the Red Line locally and can't find it anywhere, tomorrow I'll let checking out another supplier for a good synthetic substitute to the R/Line.
Thanks again and I'll post the changes if any on the rpm's

TC Oil

I use Redline MT90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil. If you do use something else, just be sure that it's GL-4.
