Bang goes the diff lock

Yep. Just heard a very loud bang and now the rear diff lock doesn't work...

I was climbing up an incline with both diff lock leavers pull up. The front engaged and just as the rear engaged one back wheel was off the ground - and at the same time the front lost traction and started to spin. So yeah, nasty load on back axle as the diff lock started to engage. Followed by loud bang.

Drives just fine so thinking the diff is all fine. Not an expert by any means on how the diff lock actually works, what's the possible outcomes of my little laps in brain use (yeah this is 100 percent pilot error). Sounded expensive ha ha.

RE: Bang goes the diff lock

If it were me, the first thing I would do is to drain the fluid and check for metal pieces.

What Dutch said, and most likely you have broken one of the 4 axle shafts.

RE: Bang goes the diff lock

Certainly check the diff fluid as Dutch said, but since it is driving okay otherwise, I'm wondering if you haven't bent the pin the actuates the diff lock slider. Somewhere I have seen pictures of one that was bent which resulted in problems actuating the diff lock. I can see that the sudden torque may have pushed the locker teeth back against the actuating pin and bent it. But check the oil (and even remove the diff cover) because even if a bent pin is the problem, you still could have sheared a corner off of one of the locker teeth which will then go through the gears and bearings and cause damage.
