G500 - Variation in spark plug condition

I changed spark plugs on my -99 G500 today. Fairly straigh forward job, took me about 3 hours. Not rushing.

The reason I did this was that the engine had started to develope some rough idle (coming and going), and fuel-consumption had started to rise. Since I have no idea when the plugs was changed the last time, I decided to start there.

Inspecting the spark plugs revaled that all the plugs on the right cylinder row had foulings, and the ones on the left looked OK.

The car is using some oil, I refill 1 litre every 4.000 km, and it has 320.000 km on the meter.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Re: G500 - Variation in spark plug condition

Hello Hans,

On my 93 500GE with the M117 engine, I had something like this and after testing the compression on each cylinder ( all good), I believe the problem was the valve guide seals had dried out and needed to be changed. With a friends help, we changed them and I have not had any further problem with the G burning much oil and the spark plugs are not fouling.

Just my experience, hope it helps.

Re: G500 - Variation in spark plug condition

Hello AGuess. Thanx for the input.
Since the fouling was even on each cylinder, on that row, I don't suspect problems with pistons or pistons rings.
You suggestion sounds reasonable, worth investigating.
