bad pulley bearing - again

I love Karl's aluminum pulleys
but the bearings can still go bad
good thing is, they can be replaced
too bad I used a Mexican bearing
should have used SKF

the seizing bearing created so much resistance that the bolt holding the pulley in place bent
not good

who can pull a part number (bolt) for me, please?

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

Did the bearing make any noise giving indication of an impending failure prior to letting go.

Out of interest how many miles did the bearing last prior to failure.

I carry spare bearings for my pulleys just incase.

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

Harold, I think it may be part #11 ( A 112 990 01 12 ) shown here:

http://mercedes-benz-teile.info/view_SubGroupAction.php?lang=E&mode...

You can look at the diagram and verify. I am not sure of your chassis model....463.249?

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

Mike,

I think, that's the part number all M112 and M113 are identical
I am already contemplating to steal one from Karl's ML
but I'll try the local dealer first

Colin,

yes, the bearing started making noise about 5 days ago
every day I thought - I am gonna do that tomorrow
and I thought the same thing when I left to buy some cigars

In my case just a new bearing won't do - I have to have the bolt as well
I don't know how many miles I have driven - maybe 8k
the bearings went in on April 20
for less than $3 you won't get much
but it was all they had here in La Paz
you gotta be thankful that you live in the 1st world and have access to almost anything
I don't

So, for the meantime I'll use another cheapo bearing until I can get some good stuff
it's the 6301 2RS bearing that you find in almost all cars somewhere

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

Ok guys - it's not as bad as I thought
the bolt is fine
the exploded bearing made the pulley sit at an angle that made me think, the bolt was bent
will install the new bearing asap
since I always have enough spare belts, no need for a dealer visit

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

Would lubricating that bearing have kept the explosion at bay?

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

the bearing is sealed on both sides - no way to lube it

now come to think about it, I remember seeing some traces of oily stuff on my alternator
checked for an oil leak and could not find any
must have been the grease from the bearing
that was about 5 weeks ago

lesson is - don't wait after you hear noises from the bearing
sometimes hard to though where exactly a noise at the front end of the engine is coming from
I was checking with a stethoscope when the noise started and could not determine exactly whether it was the pulley or the alternator
now I know

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

Sounds like a $6 repair.
New pulley bearing for the G and one for under the hood zip tied to your extra belt.
Plus another belt...

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

so, everything is back in working order

one problem arose - I could not get the new belt on
it seemed too short
correct part number
compared with an old used one - they seemed of equal length
so I bought a new (longer) one
the one I had was 2390 (mm)
got a 2400 (mm)

perfect fit

now back to the pool

Good to hear you got some warning of an impending bearing failure, far better than the crappy plastic one that let go on me without warning.

When I brought the uprated pulleys I also ordered replacement bearings to keep onboard as spares, which is why it is good to hear you had some notice of the failure.

Thanks for the feed back.

RE: bad pulley bearing - again

The original dust cap is very important to re-use.

Harald, I do have a spare belt and an old pulley laying in my G-wagen, left side of my sleeping platform.

Greetings from Germany

Karl

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

I had my idler replaced with Karl's aluminum one a few months ago and realized that the tech didn't put back the dust cover. Does anyone have the part number for the cover? Much appreciated.

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

could it be
that my spare fan belt did not like the heat under the hood?
Could it be that it got shorter?
could that be the reason, why it did not fit (too short)

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

The heat was probably not good for its longevity, but I doubt it made it shrink that much.  The belt might fit in a ziplock bag between your seat bottom and the top of the seat box.

Was the dust cap in place over the pulley face?

Re: bad pulley bearing - again

There were two to three different belt lengths for the m113 g500, aftermarket vs Oem are considerably different according to e c s .
