Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

Brought my 1997 W463 LWB to body shop yesterday, to fix some surface corrosion underneath the windshield seal. To my surprise the whole lower section of the frame, has full on rust. We decided to replace the frame with part number #4636700602. The part should come in a week or so. Does anyone on the forum have pictures of such metal work. I have full confidence with my body person, but I am curious how it is done.

RE: Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

I have seen the ones for the rear corners where it's common to see rust under the brake lights. It looks like a freshly stamped piece of sheet metal. The Auto body shop would cut the seams and/or welds to the old identical piece, then replace that piece of sheet metal.

RE: Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

Being that mine is the same year, I will have to check under the seal on mine.

I think G-AMG recommended that POR-15 be used also.

RE: Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

Here is a update, we replaced the inner frame and outer frame. The G will go into paint this week, and hopefully we are back on the road at the end of the week.

RE: Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

Anyone have an opinion what causes the rust here?

Could it have been a windshield replacement where the installer scratches the area?

Re: Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

also my car had the same problem, though at a very early stage so was able to cure before replacing the all frame.
The opinion I developed is that water accumulates on the bottom of the seal and there it remains even for weeks after the car was exposed to rain. just give it time and it will rust the metal.

RE: Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

When we took out the windshield, there was no windshield adhesive to be found on the frame. Moisture accumulated at the bottom of the frame and hence corrosion. When I bought the new seal, I purchased also so Mercedes A 005 989 61 71 windshield adhesive. This is the only spot of corrosion on the G.

Re: Front Windshield Frame Corrosion

Great work!!

It seems necessary to remove the windshield every 2-3 years for routine maintainance.
