Studded snow tires?

Have read through old posts on this site but thought I'd ask about current opinion. I have always run studded winter tires on my cars (northern New England winters). I'd like to do the same with the G. According to Tirerack, Goodyear Dura tracs are studdable and available in 275-65 R18. They seem to have been well regarded per old posts. Anything else I ought to be considering?
Thank you.

Re: Studded snow tires?

I used Duratracks last winter not studded and they were great. With a G you don't really need studs but they do help a little. BTW I may be selling my 33" Duratracks since now I run 35's and 33's look a bit too small with my lift. They were used for a full year about 8k miles. I think their size is 275-70 R18 and they are mounted on chrome Ashtaroth wheels.

Re: Studded snow tires?

Nokian studded tires are pretty good too, some of the best out there.

I've been in a Sprinter that have ran them and went on logging roads in the winter without any problems.

Re: Studded snow tires?

GY Wrangler Duratracs with studs on 16" wheels works good on my 1992 300GE SWB. Snow and ice covered roads for 6 months during winter.

Re: Studded snow tires?

Nokian are also some of the best snow tires but Duratracks work better in deep snow in my opinion. They are designed for heavy commercial trucks so they also do a good job offroad in mud and dirt. They are more like an all terrain tire.

I run 265/75/16 Studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT tires on MB Atik wheels in the winter and 265/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs on MB Ashtaroth wheels in the summer

RE: Studded snow tires?

It really depends on wether you're doing any heavy offloading, or not.

If you're doing offloading during winter, go for an AT tire with siping and studs. Note that some AT tires, like the Yokohama Geolandars I had, didn't have siping - the tyre pattern was consisting of larger lands and channels. This is good for mud and loose snow, but pretty dangerous on packed snow and ice, as the only thing providing grip is the edges. Go for a tyre with siping, like General Grabber, BF Goodrich A/T or similar.

If you're not doing much offloading, I'd go for a SUV snow tire with studs.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 or 8 SUV, Continental Ice Contact, Hankook WR11 would be good.

Re: Studded snow tires?

I have General Grabbers AT2 with studs. The tires are winter rated with snow flake symbol and have served me well the last 5 seasons.

I had the "pleasure" to experience that last year. Downhill on packed snow and ice - I ended up putting the car in neutral and slide downhill. Apply breaks where/when possible. Fun ...
Got Hakkapelittas after that adventure

RE: Studded snow tires?

Thank you all for the info. I ended up giving up on the 275-65-18 idea and went with 265-60-18 Hakkapeliitta 8s. The local tire place was able to get those promptly, supposedly they are the same size as what is used on some of the Ford pick up trucks.

Re: Studded snow tires?

Running these tires on all 4 G's during winter.

http://www.finn.no/finn/torget/annonse?finnkode=53712252&searchclic...

Siped in the middle and 150pcs dumptruck ice studs on the sides (285/75-16)

Works great!
