I have heard of the transfer cases going bad and MB would only replace the complete unit including the gearbox. Not sure if one can buy the transfer case for the 7 speed separately today.

The transmission and transfer case are listed separately both in the EPC and the on-line price list. That would lead me to believe that they are individually available.

Awesome. Thank you for the clarification.

Of interest is the fact that the TC is quite a bit more expensive than the tranny. I would have posited the other way.

I would personally avoid the compressor G55 models used. The maintenance described by Tradein is reasonable, I have done similar on my 2002, plus replaced all rubber hoses.

What is wrong with the G55 M113s? It is in E55 and SL55s making it one of the Higher volume AMG motors and it is reliable if kept stock. People get themselves in trouble with modding it I thought. It is not without problems but the shortcomings are well documented in forums with fixes.

It is not for the engine, you are right about its reliability if well maintained. My concern is for the axle shafts wear because of the high engine torque, especially the front shafts and bearings.

FWIW my 2005 G400 has a fair amount of torque and 320.000 km on it with no notable drive-train wear. The torque converter however was replaced @ 250.000 km

Re: Upgrade from 2002? Major year differences?

I had on '06 E55 that I had turned up to a solid 690 HP and 740 Tq that I put 105k absolutely trouble and maintinance free miles on...short of tires fluid, changes and front susp parts around 75k. I believe this has to be the most reliable, yet powerful motor combo ever made!

Re: Upgrade from 2002? Major year differences?

I had an '03 for several years. It was very solid but had the usual window register failures and the front end shimmy drove me kinda nuts. One day I had to take it in for something and wandered around the lot; that turned out to be a costly excursion because they just happened to have a 2012 white G550 with 5000 miles showing. I asked to drive it out of curiosity about the same refinements the OP is wondering about. When I cranked the engine and heard that throaty exhaust note my interest was piqued. And when I accelerated onto the freeway ramp, I was hooked. Needless to say we drove her home and never looked back! The ride is night and day to the 03, and I really like the exhaust tuning. No trailer hitch but I will add one soon.
