Suggested scanner tool for MY 2003 G500

As you may have seen from my posts I have decided to stay with my MY 2003 G500 for the long haul or at the most trade for a newer model. While I am no mechanic, I am a bit of a shade tree mechanic and wanted to get the proper diagnostic tool for my G500. I believe it is a Star system? Anyone on here know of what I need to get and where to buy it.

There are a lot of Chinese clones of questionable value on Ebay. Some folks here have had OK luck with them. Others, including myself, have not.

There are a couple of us who have found a very reliable source, but he is very expensive - $3k-$4k.

Re: Suggested scanner tool for MY 2003 G500

I use the ScanTool brand, the type that interfaces with your through an OBD2 cable via USB connection to your laptop. It comes with an application CD disc that you load onto your laptop and provides a desktop icon.

I have found this to be a very good basic diagnostic tool, providing accurate error code readings, and also multiple engine measurements beyond my ability to interpret.

Seem to remember it being under $30 on Ebay.

When things get more involved, I take it to my trusted independent who has the MBZ Star diagnostic equipment.

But the ScanTool has saved me a ton of $$$ on my cars over the years, fwiw.
