Breather tubes

I've been doing some investigating on my car about the various breather tubes for diffs etc and I have one unaccounted for. I have 6 breather tubes on the firewall 3 for differentials and transfer case, 1 for the locker intensifiers, 1 attached to the exhaust shield behind the engine for the transmission and 1 I have no idea what it's for and it would be very hard to trace. The one for the transmission I plan on relocating higher up with the others and terminate them in the air intake with an ARB diff breather manifold and filter. Does anyone know what the mysterious breather is for?

RE: Breather tubes

I'm aware of the breathers for the front fog lights and I'm sure this is not related to them. They are blue in color and terminate in the front fenderwells. I don't know of any other lights having breathers

RE: Breather tubes

If I remember correctly (and my memory is a bit foggy), there are two breather tubes for the transfer case - one for the gear box section and one for the atmosphere side of the differential lock diaphragm.

RE: Breather tubes

Another current thread going shows an auto transmission which looks like it has two breather lines on top here:

Not sure if it applicable to later model tranny like yours.

RE: Breather tubes

I ran across this picture of the transfer case in a PDF about the operation of the transfer case. You can see the three pneumatic connections and the wire for the diff lock engaged switch. But the question still remains - is the diff lock diaphragm atmosphere breather vent the sixth one you see or does it connect to and share the intensifier diaphragm atmosphere breather vent tube.

Re: Breather tubes

The transmission has only one breather tube, I'm pretty sure about it and I'm also pretty sure the third tube of the transfer case doesn't tie in to the intensifier breather tube. I was looking at some other pic of VG150 transfer cases online and I didn't notice there were 3 tubes attached to it but it's hard to see. Since nobody has a definitive answer I'm going to look at the car carefully and post the findings. The MBUSA G500 may have 6 breather tubes coming up too, can somebody check? Also can somebody please post a picture of the transmission breather on the MBUSA G500? It must be different since the left exhaust pipe doesn't run behind the engine like on my car

RE: Breather tubes

In this pic you can see another banjo fitting behind the locker diaphragm with the third hose attached so mystery solved. This transfer case is electric shift so the later G's are the same.

RE: Breather tubes

Hi Ilian,
I have 04 G500, and I just found out that I have two unconnected breather tubes as you can in the picture
One is on the top where the tubes are rolled up and the other one is at the bottom. I haven't confirmed it yet, but I'm thinking they are the same line of the both ends.
Is this a just extra line? I don't think any air is circulating on both ends since I can't feel anything when I touch them with the engine on

RE: Breather tubes

You shouldn't feel any air moving in these lines.  They are extension lines to the vents that to equalize pressure in the axles, and gear cases. As these devices heat and cool small amounts of air needs to leave/return.    On a 4wd that is likely to go deep into water or mud, having those vents extended up high reduces the chance of water getting sucked in.

RE: Breather tubes

Dear Alan,
Thank you so much for your prompt reply!
So, I do not have to worry about these tubes not connected, and these are normal?

Re: Breather tubes

The tube in the first pic looks out of place, the one on the top is just the ending of one of the breathers, just tuck it in with the rest of them there. Some of these hard plastic black tubes are also vacuum lines for the diff lockers system. If you are never going to take the car offroad or thru deep water you can ignore them or you can spend a few hours making sure they are all connected and lockers functioning properly. I recommend you exercise the lockers on a regular basis on a dirt road.

RE: Breather tubes

I had to pull these tubes out sort of to show the ends on the photos.
Thank you all for your kind reply.
