230GE Rally Raid campaign

Greetings folks, I have been a bit absent from this forum lately and I thought I ought to drop a link to a project I am working on with my buddy William. We have co-purchased a 1988 230GE that we are transforming into a Jacky Ickx inspired Rally car to compete in the Sonora Rally in Mexico in April. We have formed GeländeVentures LLC, a joint venture that co-owns the car. We teamed up with master G mechanic, Marc Beyer and will be racing under his banner of Kraut Racing. Marc has taken us under his wing and will be our engine builder, mechanic and field mechanic during the race! Needless to say we couldn't be more excited.
Please follow our build and support our endeavor by liking our FB page here

Information on the rally can be found here

Re: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

Thanks for all of the well wishes - we're going to need them all!

I'm super excited to see what Marc is going to do to the motor of the 230 to increase the performance... But not too much. Reliability is paramount. We'll keep you posted.

It will be an interesting experience and I expect we will be the "tortoise" in the proverbial tortoise and hare scenario.

Our underlying tactic is along the lines of simple and durable. We'll find out soon - the event is April 3-7, 2016.

Regardless of the outcome we'll be having a nice party in Puerto Penasco on the evening of April 7th. If anybody is inclined to be in the area we would love to have you there. Fish tacos and cervezas and G's! It doesn't get any better than that.

William

Thanks for sharing, I like both of your personal rigs that you guys have up on the facebook page. Are they both on portal axles? The white one looks like it is for sure.

Thank you! Yes Williams (Gillamonster) camper is on Tibus portals. My 500 is on stock springs with Titus' polly 50mm Spring spacers.

Re: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

... And both are riding on 315/75/16 BFG KO2's - about 34.5" - awesome tires. We're considering running them on the rally G.

Re: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

Awesome! I just picked up a set of the KO2's a couple weeks ago, and agree they are a great tire. I can only imagine the look on the jeep boys faces when you drive by in a G with 35" tires and beadlocks.

RE: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

Best of luck to you!

Is the truck going to be white in color?
What is the aprox weight you think when race ready with fuel before the longest stages ?
It looks like a tough race with long stages, high temps and lots of unknown terrain where the G should shine, I admire you guys ,may the G gods be on your side and let endurance prevail.
Are you expecting some really rough rocky sections besides the sand?

Please keep posting it will be fun to follow the adventure

Thank you! We will paint the G white, it really is the best color to showcase sponsor's stickers. We are hoping the final weight will be around stock SWB 230ge weight, after we pull out all unnecessaries and replace them with the cage and added fuel, etc. As far as conditions, temps should be tolerable in April, maybe even comfortable. NOAA is predicting a wet spring, so we will see.... We are expecting a lot of dune action, we are crossing our fingers we will be able to produce enough power out of our lightly modded 4 cylinder to make the dunes passable. There will also be a lot of dirt two track, a bit of beach running, and I do hope some rocks ( we all know the G will shine there). The corse is highly top secret and all of this is based on little hints the race coordinators drop. We do have to remind our selves that there are two Subaru Outbacks in the line up and so I can't imagine we will see any majorly gnarly rock crawling, but who knows.

We are happy to keep posting updates here on P3, but I operate on a tablet and posting pictures here is something I choose not to waste my time with as I have to jump through three steps to resize them, I apologize but that simply takes too much time. We are keeping our FB page populated with photos and updates if you care to like our page, you will stay up to date with our progress. https://www.facebook.com/Gelandeventures/

Hi guys. We've been super busy. Here are a few pics of our modified G Wagen chassis. Things are moving fast and these are likely the last pics before the body goes on. 30 days to the Sonora Rally/Dakar Challenge.

Re: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

Those front shocks are awesome!
Interesting hitch plate as well, I assume you guys made that for possible recovery or was it on the car already?

I've been following your story on Club G and wish you both the best. What a great adventure and nice to see how much support you have gotten from the community, both locally and online.

Re: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

Thanks guys. We're having some serious fun just building this beast.

Those shocks are Fox triple bypass. They are the same front and rear but the front are definitely more prominent. Our hope is that they will allow us to go a little faster on the rough stuff without tearing the vehicle apart.

You are correct, the rear hitch was fabricated by our suspension guys down at Overland Motorsports and it will carry the winch if/when we decide to carry it. That decision will be made once we get the car on the road and see how it does in the dunes- also will depend on the local weather conditions at the race. This was their first performance G Wagen build and they really enjoyed working on it.

I have to say that I've learned a lot about the true colors of the North American G community. Regardless of their forum preference, we have received incredible support in so many ways - way above and beyond what is normal in this day and age.

We hope some of you show up in Sonora - beers and fish tacos in Puerto Penasco are on us.

I like how low profile that hitch is. I slightly bent my MBUSA hitch on Fins & Things.

RE: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

So the freshly painted body should be going back on the Chassis this week! A few more parts for the clutch and fuel filter (the bracket) and we'll be ready.

Here are some pics of where she is at as of 8pm this evening. Keep in mind that a few months ago this was a well used 28 year old G. I've been scrubbing for at least a month.

Re: 230GE Rally Raid campaign

Hi Gilamonster,

Is that a blue grease on the spline of the rear and front propeller shaft ? Is that a special grease ? I would appreciate info on that.

Thanks,

Nonong
