MB STAR Diagnostic System

I frequently get asked about a source for the MB STAR Diagnostic System. I had a very bad experience with one of the Chinese mainland suppliers; and have since avoided them like the plague while working with a very reliable, but somewhat expensive, source here in the US.

I just came across this very long thread where the OP has had good experience at a pretty good price from a Hong Kong seller on AliExpress. No personal experience here, but there seems to be several happy customers in that thread. The thread is here:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129-sl-class/2315329-got-my-mb-sta...

The link to OP's "trusted" source is:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2014-Cost-Effective-Mb-Star-C4-for-b...

Apparently, AliExpress holds your credit card payment until you advise that the item has arrived and is working as advertised. Then the payment is turned over to the seller, which is far better than Ebay's buyer protection.

Since the question of a reliable source for the STAR comes up occasionally, I thought it might be worthwhile to post this info here. However, keep in mind that I have no direct or personal experience with this seller; so, if you use them, you do so at your own risk.

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

Thank you for sharing this information Dutch.
Perhaps this post of yours will open the door to more confidence in choosing a seller and more discussions at PT3, around its use and language barriers associated with SDS. I know that I need help, as soon as I can figure out how to word my request!

RE: MB STAR Diagnostic System

I am from HK and have talked to a few vendors when I was there years ago. The SAME product can show huge difference when they can provide good technical support vs 3rd party re-seller selling the same product which could have some delay or no-show. It doesn't matter Mainland China or HK.

Nice to know AliExpress new feature.

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

Very temped to get one of these because its becoming a pain in the ass to research what programming needs to be done, and then reteaching it all to the guy at the local independent shop to get it accomplished.

If I end up doing it I'll let you all know how it goes.

Please do.  As an engineer, I find it deeply irritating to know that there are "meters to read" and "knobs to turn" that have been locked away from me by the factory.

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

All the parts already arrived as of today. I was shocked at how fast the shipping was, and the items were well packed.

Now to set some time aside to try it out. Do you have any instructional how-to's for these Dutch? Ive never used a system like this before, and dont even know where to plug it into the G at this point.

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

Thanks guys.

That link was very alarming with the cyber security issues of the chinese malware that can be present. Now im seriously considering a dedicated cheap laptop for this with the network drivers disabled.

That's what I did...albiet it came with the diagnostic system I purchased.  Its an old Dell....only used for diagnostics.  Having to "X" out all the balloons that pop up asking me to connect to wifi is annoying, but I seem to survive.  Good tool to have and aid troubleshooting electrical and motor issues.

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

Get ready for putting in some serious hours, first setting up a VM on your computer or laptop, onto debugging/bypassing MB security protocols, changing all sorts of settings, serial port, Lic-dir. on and on and lastly, trying to learn how to use it, as illustrated online. Then, without knowing, one part of the multiplexer works but not the other, i.e. DAS/Zentry/ Star finder, cable connection failures.... Run a Cesar software test, check this check that..........
The one time I thought it worked, Quik Test told me all my O2 sensors where beyond their life cycle, so I bought all four, $500+, erased the codes, put them in and still got the same test results.

After this O2 event, I put six weeks, every spare moment into trying to get this thing working as it should... Got soooo sick of the whole process of constantly searching online, looking at all possibilities/remedies.
My last attempt was to check the circuit board for poor soldered components. I bought a giant magnifying glass, checked every suspect looking soldered connection (many BTW), in the Multiplexer boards. Next was to test certain relays, this is where I dropped off, had enough!

I bought a complete set up from Rugged Computing UK for $1300, dedicated Panasonic tough-book and multiplexer. Thought I did my research but still turned into a nightmare!
Great customer service, when you could reach them, but poor overseas connection while doing team-viewer.

I would've loved to use this more but lost my stomach for it. I'm now convinced I could possibly do more harm to the truck if I kept trying to use this setup.
For instance, one evening, I found myself in Control unit ME-SFI, (related to engine management) while trying to understand why the new O2 sensors are not being recognized. Found myself in a spot where I was unable to back out of a total reprograming of the ECU.
"Program time.... 25 minutes"!!!!!!
Sweating bullets for 25 minutes, not knowing if I screwed myself, will the engine start or not.
At the end........... the truck started!
No more of this crap for me!

Ever since I've purchased this thing, I've asked myself why did I think I needed it when I have a great Indie around the corner with 35 years experience on all german autos.

My experience may not be yours.
If you would like a Tough-book laptop, loaded with MB C3 software let me know.

Best of luck with your SDS

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

One more thing, never go online with a Chinese clone, this is how you collect most viruses, mail-ware and Blacklist shut downs. That said, no online EPC is not available (I could be wrong here?) unless it's registered with MB.

My exact reasons for paying a bit more from a reliable US supplier for zero as in nada problems. When I bought Chinese, I had nothing but trouble. From my US supplier I have not had the first glitch; and I maintain a WiFi connection on my dedicated laptop without worry of malware, spam, trojans or viruses.

A good reliable working STAR/DAS/XENTRY diagnostic system is one of the most valuable tools in my kit.

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

Dutch
I did contact your local guy last year or so but seems he only sells half the package, dedicated laptop, he was not very clear about suppling the multiplexer or the cheap arse $300 multiplexer. I wanted both, configured together and tested. He could not supply that or made it difficult to understand why he wouldn't.
I scratched my head and moved on to someone else offering a complete package.
So be it!
I'm now afraid of using something that can totally immobilize the entire electronic system in these cars. Leave it to the pro's.
My truck has always worked well and when some glitch pops up, you guys are here!
Feel the love?

Re: MB STAR Diagnostic System

Okay, I now have a cheap Chinese version after the first more expensive version crapped out

#1 Cannot get EPC to work on it, bummed
#2 I only use computer for clearing vehicle fault codes, seems to work most of the time
#3 Great for looking up WIS repair documents for my G, it was worth the cost if only for the model specific electronic service manual

Never go online

Noels at Noels.com has a "widget" that seems to work well and isn't that expensive to the best of my knowledge.
