Getting ready to do G320 front steering/suspension refirb

I recently noticed while under the front of my 1995 G320 that the rubber boots on the ball joints on the tie rod were totally torn, and the BJs looked dry inside.  So, probably being original, I decided replacement was in order. I think there's a little more grease leakage out the swivel balls than is normal, as well.

After a fair bit of research, I just bought a number of new components from the MB Classic Center in preparation for replacement of the swivel ball seals, tie rod, drag link and steering shock.  Some part numbers and such had changed, so I wanted to alert folks to a few things.  I used the current EPC to order with its part numbers.

These should apply to quite a few W463 models.

Steering shock, 50mm diameter:  Ordered 463 463 04 15.  Received 240 460 01 66

Split swivel ball gasket: Ordered 460 331 03 80.  Received same.

Outside seal retaining ring: Ordered 460 331 03 58.  Received 463 335 00 58

Drag link: Ordered 463 463 04 15. Receiving same (coming from Germany).

Tie rod: Ordered 463 330 04 03.  Receiving 460 330 07 03 (coming from Germany).

Swivel ball seal staples:  Ordered 460 331 02 58. Receiving same (coming from Germany).

Outside swivel ball gasket: Ordered 460 331 00 80. Receiving same (coming from Germany).

Placed order on Monday, received parts Wednesday via FedEx.  Parts from Germany should arrive by next Wednesday.

Cheers,
Gerry

Do a search here on the split swivel ball gasket with staple. It has been widely maligned.
I have not done this job, but would not use the split seal based on others comments.

Agreed 110%!!!

Those split swivel ball seals are a total waste of time. I had to redo the job with non-split seals in less than a year.

Strange numbers on your Steering dampner. My EPC shows A.000.463.66.32.

Re: Getting ready to do G320 front steering/suspension refirb

Note: the steering shock I received from MB Classic Center is the same one as used on the Maybach 57 and 57s sedans. The current on-line EPC is not even showing the supercession. However, it is a 50mm Stabilus unit that is identical to the ones I've seen with the 463 part number.

I had investigated options such as the Bilstein unit that some folks here had used. However, MB sent me TWO steering shocks, so now I've got a spare !!!

I did many hours of research here about that, but decided to go with the split seal anyway. The "round" seal is actually quite a bit cheaper than the split unit + staples.

I consulted with a G-wagen expert friend in Germany and he said that the staple/split unit is fine as long as one takes care with the installation. Also, he mentioned (contrary to most posts that I've seen here), that the split should be facing down at installation, so that any water can escape and drain.  Just an FYI. This guy lives and breathes G's.

That said, I may well place a quick order for a set of the non-split seals, and use those.  Can't get to the job for another week or two, anyway.

Your friend is absolutely correct on the placement of the split and the staple. There is a notch in the metal retaining ring that fits the top of the staple. (See attached photo) That notch, when the metal retaining ring is properly positioned with the bolt holes and the indents in the swivel ball housing, will be at the bottom of the housing. The points on the staple should be pointed into the swivel ball.

In addition to allowing water (which should not be able to get in there in the first place) to escape, it also allows grease to pretty much flow freely out the split. Your friend may live and breath G's; but I tried the split seal in the proper facing down position, and it is a lousy application!

However, follow your bliss.

Re: Getting ready to do G320 front steering/suspension refirb

I bought a new set of the black metal retaining rings, and may not use them. They are over $100 apiece! If I do have them left over, I'll be happy to make them available to anyone here who needs them.

Thanks Mike.  That was one of many many threads on this site and others that I researched.
