Re: 463 sleeping platform - materials

I really like the ability to remove the storage containers and carry them over to where ever the cooking is happening.   Any storage container with a 12" height works.

I'm going to be doing this sort of thing this month - a sleeping platform with drawers or space for wolf packs. Still deciding there.

I am going to try sandwiching balsa with carbon fiber fabric - just because I am curious

Then 2 drawers in the back. The front compartments accessible from top

Maybe we should do a "competition" :-)

Oskar

Good luck with your project.

I was going to make mine a foam core carbon fiber laminate eventually. I have been using and abusing my 1/2" plywood prototype for a few years now and have had zero failures, It's just screwed and glued joints. I wanted to be completely satisfied with the design and layout before allocating resources into a stronger, lighter, and more refined version, but honestly I'm so happy with the prototype that I don't feel the need to build it better for myself.

+1...

The other benefit is not having to remove everything sitting on top of the platform to get to the access panel of the stored items underneath. Sure, I have to pull out 1 Wolf Pack to get to the 2nd pack, but it's a lot easier than relocating everything sitting on the top. And if it's the front pack, it's right there - no straps/tie downs, just pull it out.

And, after pulling out the packs a couple times, you figure out pretty quickly which ones go in the back and which ones are kept 'at the ready'.

I guess everything has pros and cons.
If it's raining cats and dogs .. I'd rather access the storage from the top ... :-) . So, boxes or drawer but accessible from the top as well.

Another hick up. With those lovely electric window regulators ... if you need to open/close a window in the middle of the night .. 3/4 asleep. Get the key in the ignition .. turn it to the right position and then fiddle with the window switch. argh .. I'd love to have crank handles

Oskar

btw. here is the new special tool, pretty easy to fab. Cut 1 nose off. Dremel a pocket in each nose and weld in on a bar:

Hmmm... now that has me thinking – some slicing/dicing of the platform, a piano hinge here or there, and you've got the best of both worlds!

Nice seat removal tool as well!
