W460 Glow Plug Light Not Working

Hello.
My name is Brent and my father and I have just imported a 1986 w460 300GD from the Netherlands.
The G is in excellent condition. Little to no rust etc etc.
I am, however having quite a time with the glow plug light.
First off I have replaced all the glow plugs. The original Beru s looked a little old so I swapped out with Bosch components, they are parallel type. Surely this would fix the light. Well it didn't. Ok no biggie. Check the fuse on the glow plug relay. Fuse looks like it's from the factory, not cracked, I wish I looked as good at 30 as I was born in '86. Decide to check the bulb for the glow plug. Looks perfect. Decided to swap one of the illumination bulbs. Glow plug light still does not work and the bulb from it shines brightly. Hmmmm. Ok open up the relay. Inside looks like it's just left the factory, I have never seen copper that shinny. Everything looks in tact no scoring or scorch marks. Decide to get my friend to turn on the key and watch the contact brakes snap closed, still no glow plug light. Could it still be the relay?

When you turn the ignition on, after 10-15 seconds do you hear a click coming from the relay? if it clicks after some time and you are able to start the truck easy so the relay is working and you have a wiring problem (like the wire between the relay and the bulb). However, the relay wiring is pretty simple.

Re: W460 Glow Plug Light Not Working

DesertStar I'll study that more closely.
Titus we didnt do a long test. Maybe 5 seconds but when the key was turned to the glow plug phase along with battery and oil light and parking break coming on. The relay immediately snaps shut and closes the breaker points. I'll test again and see if it snaps off after 15 seconds.
Looking at the back of the instrument multigauge with the glow plug indicator, there is no wire with female spade on it so it seems the bulb pulls energy through the board it's sitting in.
I have a decent understanding of how diesels work but much more experience with engines of the flat gasoline kind.

I will say that the vehicle hasn't had a real issue starting ever as I turn the key on for about a good 5-7 seconds before initiating the starter and no hard starts or anything, she snaps to life pretty well but it's summer here and the lowest temperature seen while starting is maybe 56 degrees Fahrenheit?

Re: W460 Glow Plug Light Not Working

P.s thank you guys for your help and thoughts. Really nice to see a board that doesn't have people screaming at each other to use the search function or arm measuring contests like on most Subaru forums and even vw forums, it'd really nice and appreciated:)

Re: W460 Glow Plug Light Not Working

Before pronouncing the relay dead I would personally first confirm a few things: - is there power going TO the relay when ignition switch turned on - is there power going out of the relay when ignition turned on - that one is for the light. I dont remember the wires colors, but I can check them tomorrow on my truck or you can find the wiring online. on the back of the multi gauge in your gauge cluster you will see a round plug with like 20 wires - one of them is for the glow plug light. Again, I dont remember the colors, sorry.

Edit: if you search my old threads you will find a old one, from maybe 2011 when I did one of my diesel swaps. there is a description and pictures of wiring the relay,if my memory still serves me well (which is kind of doubtful)
