I have always used the pressure bleed technique, pushing clean fluid into the resivior and out the bleeds. I would guess that one could possibly gravity bleed the system but don't run your resivior dry and introduce air into the lines. Pressure bleed systems are inexpensive and work well. Attached is the official MB procedure. However, I would guess that you could also bleed by using the diff lock switches to put pressure on each individual circuit.
