GL275 transmission trouble

Hey. Im having trouble in my 87' 300gd, the transmission is popping out of 1st gear occasionally... I changes all the rubber rings on the rods under the car, it made it a little better. They are not bent, and for me it looks like they are positioned right. I loosened all of them, when the box was in "N", and they were all in line.

I have ordered oil with 236.2 spec, and will change when it arrives in the mail. But im afraid its worn out? What can be wrong here?

Regards
Tommy

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

When the gearshifter is not in any of the gears, you can insert a 6mm rod at the underside of the gearshifter through the gearshifter arms.
That is the basic position when adjusting your shifter rods.

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

Thanks for the tip but....

It did not help. It was also adjusted correct. But i tried to adjust it so it pulled a little extra in 1st, no improvement.

Kinda grey oil in it, i changed today. Worn out ???

Its so strange, cause when it is engaged in 1st it works well with absolutely no weird sounds :/

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

Can it be the synchronizing rings that are worn out?

I find it easier to get it into 1st if i roll slowly (5km/h f.example)

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

I believe Mercedes does not keep "any" spares fro this gearbox . Friend here has tried to source some of the specialized bearings unsuccessfully. CAn anyone confirm this.

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

Im looking for an auto case. Guess it will be some work to get it working perfectly, but worth it in the end. Im tired of this.

Indeed, maybe syncroniser rings or the clutch doesn't completely disengage.

When it comes to rebuilding, I would go for a different transmission instead of putting a lot of money in a GL275 (717.42x)

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

I will try to change brake fluid on the clutch. And maybe it works a little better while I find a suitable 720.1 case from a 280ge. Im not satisfied with the getrag so wont cost any money on it

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

Of course there are plenty options to find a better 5 speed; from the iron box 711.11x to more modern Getrags 717.44x as found on 290GD's, Sprinters or 717.460 as found on C-class.
Always check if the starter is on the correct side (right side for m110).

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

Yeah, I've considered the 711.116 case since I plan on getting bigger wheels anyway and the 5th gear with 0.8~ ratio would not be needed.

But I prefer automatic so hope i can find one and get all the vacuum details as well!

Re: GL275 transmission trouble

Changed fluid on the clutch today... And i dont know for sure but I think it got a little better.. Maybe some of the problem was that it didnt disengage 100% ? And the grey oil was because of all the synchroing and grinding gears? :p
