W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

I am going to install a new Homokinetic Center Propshaft on my 1997. How do you get the transfer case and transmission to be in neutral, so I can rotate the shaft, to remove and then install the nuts and bolts?

I tried that, and the shaft would not rotate. I wil try again. Do i need to have the wheels off the ground?

Automatic transmission requires using a pencil like object, to unlock the shifter from park to neutral for this purpose.

RE: W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

Both the transmission and the transfer case must be in neutral of the HK shaft to spin freely. Be sure to set the parking brake when the drive train is in this state! I almost lost my G down the driveway when I forgot one day (luckily I was able to run fast enough to jump in and set the brake while it was rolling).

The OP G is a 1997 model year. The pencil trick does not start until 2002.

RE: W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

I have been reading on another thread and the manual the following:

1. Always mark prop shaft position against transmission and transfer case flanges before disconnecting.
2. If you are using new shaft or did not mark shaft turn YELLOW marking on transfer case flange all way to the bottom.
3. GREEN mark on propeller shaft must be at the top. (This is for middle shaft only!)
4. Tighten bolts diagonally across staring with UPPER bolt.
5. To remove bolts use high quality(HAZET) short 8mm alien socket with flex extension and air gun.
6. Always use new bolts and nuts.
7. Torque is 60Nm.
8. Good luck!

But on the new shaft I got there is no marking. Fellow G enthusiasts please advise.

Is there markings on the TC flange and the transmission?

RE: W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

My new HK shaft did not have markings either, but the flanges on the transmission and the transfer case did, so I just aligned those marks (e.d., both on bottom) and put the shaft in. Somewhere in a post at the time someone said that MB now balances the shafts to the point where "orientation" is not needed, hence no markings. Can anyone confirm that?

RE: W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

There are multiple sources on the forum on the subject, everything from rebuilding to installing new. The rebuilds posts are great sources for R&R of the propshaft. http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=17736&po...

Besides the very complete post already mentioned, I found that if you remove the three bolts that attach the transfer case bushings to the frame you can slide the TC back about 1/2" which will make removal and replacement of the HK shaft much easier. Be sure to mark the position of the bolts/washers so that you can get the TC back to its original position (I used a small spot of paint to create a "shadow mark" which I cleaned off with some lacquer thinner when I was done).

Any advice on loosening bolts and nuts?

The bolts can be tough to get out because rust forms where they penetrate the steel CV joint housing. I wish I had a specific method, but I found that a really high quality hex (allen) head socket set, loads of PB blaster, the correct assortment of socket extensions, and lots of patience were really helpful. BTW, I think that the newer bolts are Torx instead of allen head (which tend to strip out).

Re: W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

Took out the center shaft yesterday, only to find that the bearing for the transmission flange is kaput. Took out the transmission, for rebuild. Should be ready tomorrow.

Re: W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

Vibration from the driveshaft could have damaged the transmission bearing. I would rebuild or replace the driveshaft if it's old.

Re: W463 Homokinetic Center Propshaft

Got my G back. Transmission rebuilt and new center shaft installed. In hindsight, replace or rebuild your center shaft before you wear out your tranny if over 100,000 miles. I highly recommend Steve Kraft's shop for any G repairs. KRAFT GERMAN AUTO IN BROOKLYN.
