If I correctly remember my like issues, two things come to mind, low battery charge, effecting the SAM/security or a leak thru the rubber antenna over the windshield, also effecting the SOS/tele-aid/security, in the overhead console. Two simple checks without too much effort.

Have you experienced lots of rain and is the truck parked outside?

But I did find water leaking into the overhead console, via the rubber roof antenna. Open the area where the CD changer is mounted and see if it's wet.

Could this happen to our trucks by jump starting another car?

The information came from my Indie at the time who said it can be a problem on several different chassis types. The only one I remember specifically is the ML because I had one then. He said that even a correct polarity jump can damage the SAMs and recommended that for my ML that I use a trickle charger to bring up the battery voltage slowly before jumping if I ever had a completely dead battery. Fortunately I never had to test that theory with the ML.

We've all known reversing polarity could cause an explosion, "from our first early days of jumping any car". I'm guessing any handyman knows this fact! I'm still puzzled how easily this could happen with a simple jump, even if done properly. A trickle charge is best but not when your caught away from home. Triple A will not show up with a trickle charger, so what can we do to prevent this? Even if we carry a jump pack, could this burn the SAM. Should we use some sort of resistance, inline to prevent a surge? Sorry for the multi Q's

I'm not sure what the damage mechanism is. I've always speculated that jumping causes some sort of voltage spike that propagates through the electrical system. In the old days, MB used a centralized electrical protection scheme (the OVP or Over Voltage Protection Relay). This was a robust affair with fuses and a massive Zener diode that could protect the various system modules (there weren't many then) against just about anything including a reverse polarity jump. But as the number of modules proliferated, MB had to go to a module based protection system and unfortunately this is not as robust so modules can succumb to electrical disturbances easier. I suspect that the less robust module protective devices (smaller Zener diodes, integrated circuit regulators, etc.) can't handle large excursions and so burn out. It's like the old saying, "the transistor will always blow to protect the fuse". As for what to do to prevent it if I'm stuck away from home- I'm not sure. I think I would first try jumping battery to battery with the jump vehicle not running and the key out of the ignition in the MB. This would limit the system voltage to ~12.6 volts instead of the up to 14.6 volts of a running vehicle. I'd make the connection and let it stand (and equilibrate) for about 10 or 15 minutes first before attempting a start. But this is all speculation on my part. I have been lucky and never had to jump any of my SAM equipped vehicles. Edited by Floobydust 10/3/2016 9:00 PM

I not sure for a G SAM, but on many models new SAM modules require "coding" with the SDS system to function correctly. I hope it is plug and play on the G.

All that info isn't hard to understand, seems these MB SAM vehicles have evolved so fast, leaving most weekend FIY peeps paying dearly for doing nothing out of the ordinary. It's a shame, $900 per SAM replacement. Ertech pays forward for doing nothing wrong. Keep us posted Ertech?
