Anyone know the taper of Late-style W460 tie rod ball joints / steering arms?

I have a bad ball joint at the right hand end of the tie rod on my 1980 280GE. I tried to order a new tie rod from Eurotruck, but it's been back-ordered for a couple months and I'm getting worried. Today I called Vlad and he says he's pretty sure that old-style tie rod with the smaller ball joints is NLA for a few years now.

I happen to have a few of the newer-style 460 tie rods accumulated over the years that I could use so I'm thinking about reaming the holes in the arms out to accept the larger ball joints. There are a bunch of different tapers available from reamer suppliers though and trying to get the measurement exactly right off of existing parts is kind of difficult so I thought I'd ask here in case someone else has been down this road already.

Unfortunately, the only spare steering arms I have are for a RHD truck so they don't help me. In my younger and crazier daze I did once cut a pair of pitman arms in two and weld them back together to make a swap I desired. It worked great and as far as I know, nobody ever died driving that car ('71 Firebird), but I'd rather not do that again. So I'll just ream these out. It should be easy enough, people do it all the time on Broncos and Jeeps and things when they swap the steering links to the tops of the arms for better clearance.

Does anybody know what the taper is on the ball joints of the later-style 460 tie rod?

Thanks!

I won't need to modify my steering arms after all. Not yet anyway.

In the end, Sean was able get a new original style tie rod for me. It's been a bit of a wait, but it should be here before the weekend, and I'll be back on the road for a few hundred thousand more miles.

Thanks to Sean and Eurotruck Improters.

I was considering reaming my knuckles for 1-ton US sized ball joints and then just making a tie rod and drag link. Then I found new replacements on eBay really cheap and went with the stock size stuff made by TRW

Dave, my 1980 460 and my 2001 461 have the same taper. It is the diameter of the drag links that has increased.

Because of the cost of these things I now make my own steering stuff using a 36 x 20 ST 52 Hollow bar with tapped ends and then bent to shape, and an M24 screw in rod end from an old MB truck we used to get here. The taper is the same as the G's and they cost in SA, about 25 of your money per end. Now I can cheaply replace all the ends and invest the savings in the pursuit of happyness and gud speling.

Hi Dave,

If still needed, hereby some links to tie rod ends which I sorted out some time earlier. I should check my measurements again, but I think these rod-ends got the same taper and thread as the MB ones:

From steering housing to steering arm and track rod:

SHP303KR and SHP304KR got the same dimensions as a Ford Transit.
See http://www.mister-auto.nl/fl/spoorstangeind/febi-bilstein-12575_g91...
Febi Bilstein ref. nr. are 12575 and 12574.

I did not order any of these parts to try them out, just internet searching

Re: Anyone know the taper of Late-style W460 tie rod ball joints / steering arms?

Morning all,

The tie rods on my W460 are all shot. I have looked through this thread and looked for some boots without much success...did anyone try the ball joints from Bram's post above? Can anyone confirm if they are the correct size/spec.

I'm happy to be the gunnie pig on this one if someone can offer some reassurance.

thanks
G

Thanks for the link (the old ones did not work), I will have to wait to get my G back so I can measure all of the inner and outer diameters.
