(and to the Mercedes world in general) Last weekend one of the u joints in the rear driveshaft of my 280GE gave up the ghost. I am currently searching for options on how to deal with the issue. What I have come up with so far: 1. I found stock u joints for sale, but cannot find a shop that is able to properly install a staked joint. 2. There is a reputable shop near me that will either build a whole new driveshaft, or put a new yoke on my current one so that it will accept a common spring clip joint. 3. I could buy a complete driveshaft and have it shipped from Europe. What is my best option? Any input is appreciated!

Is there somewhere else that would? The only place I have found them so far is from a company in France. They sell both the u joint and the whole driveshaft.

With the correct Part Number and if it is still in the world wide MB parts inventory, any MBUSA Parts Counter should be able to get it. Just be careful that they do not use Matrix Pricing, which is MBUSA MSRP ++ $$. If you can provide the correct P/N, I can refer you to an MBUSA dealer that discounts 25% off of MSRP.

AirheadNut Member Date registered: Nov 2016 Location: Montana Vehicle(s): 1988 280GE SWB Posts: 31 | RE: W460 Rear Driveshaft Options I have finally gotten the part number from the driveshaft: 460-410-4504-0405-880. I believe I have found the same part in the Bailey Morris catalogue (thanks, @kmaser). I have also talked to the local driveline company, and at this point it looks like it will be much simpler to get a whole new driveshaft than to try to repair the original. It is now down to whoever is the least expensive and the quickest.

That's not am MB P/N. MB P/N's have the format: A.xxx.xxx.xx.xx. The P/N can be looked up on the EPC using your VIN. Using the first 10 digits of the number you provided, this pops up at my preferred parts supplier: https://www.oediscountparts.com/parts/index.cfm?searchText=460.410.4...

I bought a driveshaft from a company in France, it is pretty much identical to the old one except that it has snap ring u-joints rather than staked in ones. The unit cost a little less than half of anywhere else I could find, and seems like it is good quality. I got it installed today, and so far so good.

You would have a spare for anyone that came to the forum looking for a shaft. You may recoup some of your shaft replacement cost and make a friend too.

If anyone knows of a reputable shop here in the US, please let me know.

I have no experience with him.... just and FYI. http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/g-ologe
