Not an issue as the engine is being pulled next week, but just interesting to note.

The data card refers to a cable winch, which was normally driven by a seperate PTO off the transfer case. If so it is ultra rare. Couldn't it also have been a Rotzler bumper mounted electric winch? If so, you might find an id-plate in your front door frame. On my G, here's a Rotzler id-plate mounted as my G also came with a winch ex-factory I believe. @ Gunney: could you share a picture of your transfer case (driver side). If yours is one with a PTO, you got a nice option lurking underneath. gr. Bram (DSCN6674 (Small).JPG) Attachments ---------------- DSCN6674 (Small).JPG (52KB - 0 downloads)

It's a little tighter than the origional Merc pattern but I love it. It's retro, tartan, and heavy duty! Now just to get my seats sorted and off to the trimmer. Rear drums looking neat and tidy after thier touch up. Edited by RSF.Gunney 1/15/2017 1:29 AM

After delivering the truck for her engine swap and having the V8 removed it was discovered that the engine mounts had been cut and rewelded on the chassis to mount the V8. As such a quick order had to be placed for some new mounts (I was not going to risk custom mounts being fabbed up badly by a local machine shop.) Work will start again today, I'm expecting pictures this evening. I have also found a 230ge that is being resto-moded with a G55 body kit and new interior so I hope this means I now have some new front seats, a tidier dash and a few other nice used parts that I don't have to purchase!

A lot of good news, keep up the good work. I recently installed new engine frame brackets on my 1982 300GD chassis. RSF.Gunney Regular Date registered: Nov 2016 Location: Qatar Vehicle(s): W460 - 280ge Posts: 63 | RE: Introduction w460 Resurrection in Qatar As part of the ongoing project, and while my engine mounts are being welded in and my mechanic is being mysteriously quiet I thought I would take it upon myself to work out what parts were needed to get the AC operational on the M110. (Fortunately, the power steering pump on the M110 and M117 are shared so they should just bolt across). There was not much online about AC for the 280ge but the 280se and 280ce are close enough on the front end to the point that research and parts can be scavenged to get things running. I will try to relocate the AC compressor from the M117, as it's mounted lower left on the M117 and needs to be placed upper right on the M110 it may now work and I will have to trade it in for a Denso unit. Here are some pictures of the education process: - You need a new lower pulley that has 3 grooves (The 280ge Engine I got only had 2 grooves). > 1 for the Alternator and water pump. > 1 for the power steering pump. > 1 for the AC compressor. - You need an upper idler pulley assembly to route the belt over the thermostat and to tension the belt. - You need a bracket that mounts the compressor above the Alternator... and the compressor has to be short enough to clear the exhaust manifold that sits right behind it. Below are examples for a Denso compressor and a custom fabricated mount. I looked at parts from overseas resources and the cost racked up so quickly that I shot an email off to a South African classic merc contact asking if he had any old 280ce engines in his yard.... the W123 was VERY popular in South Africa and he has SIX of the engines in his workshop for parts. My pulley assemblies are on the way! Edited by RSF.Gunney 1/31/2017 6:37 AM

The engine mounts are welded in (Photos will be taken tonight) and my mechanic will be fitting the pulleys for the AC compressor and trying to get everything ship shape on the engine before dropping it in next week. Some more parts are due in on the 20th of Feb, so we are close, but still so very far! In my wanderings I stumbled upon this little beauty. Looks like an ex-mil truck that is now used for hunting.

(It has been raining here so everything is filthy!) I have to keep reminding myself that this is a camping truck not a trailer queen when I see things like surface rust on the steering shaft that should be pulled, sanded and painted

Having owned 4x4s with big V8's on 17's my whole life and switching between 315.70r17 and 285.75r17 I was not sure what the smaller 280ge engine and 18's needed... After doing some reading I think the magic number is going to be 275.70r18. They will provide enough side wall for deflation in the sand, the 33" diameter will help with the gearing (although marginal) and the rubber to rim ratio looks great. They should look a little something like this (I couldn't find any w460's running the combo): Edited by RSF.Gunney 2/16/2017 1:51 AM

It's not worth going into why it took so long and what it took but hiding with her now is the correct factory spec 208e with original 4-speed box, with AC drive and idler pulleys. Now the work can start back up again, the list is still VERY long! (01.005.png) Attachments ---------------- 01.005.png (617KB - 0 downloads)

After lots of tracing and frustration, all of the aftermarket wiring in the engine bay that had been put in for the V8 and all its accessories has been removed and we are back to the original harness (or as close as possible). Tonight I will break out the dreaded wiring diagram and get mapping to work out what is what. And then when I am rolling on the floor crying I'm going to break out the camera and come back here to the forum to beg for help. It was sad to see but it told me everything I needed to know and now I can sort out all my electrickery! I'm waiting for some junction boxes to get in so in the meantime the interior got a thorough scrub down and both front seats were mounted (brackets had to be welded) and the back seats are next. It turns out my short shaft needs a compressed length of 355mm (280ge + 4Speed from a w461), I've documented the short shaft length of every variety of W460 and W461 combination (as soon on the paper in the background) and there are no 355mm that are OEM.... but that's how long mine needs to be with 5mm of play, so that the instruction to the machine shop. One month later.... I have not given up, I've just been in Indonesia on holiday for 3 weeks. I came back to some more parts and I have a big shopping weekend ahead. I have measured and worked out that I need: - Extended oil cooler lines. - Clutch line. (EPDM steel braided hose) - Gasket paper for the clutch slave - Bolts for the clutch slave - Numerous Engine mounting bolts (AC Compressor Bracket & Idler pulley) - A custom bolt welded up to tension the power steering pump. - Water hose. - A whole lott-a ss hose clamps. - My short shaft extended 9.5cm (who DOESNT need this! :D ) Off I go to my trusty machine shop and the industrial area to find a good hydraulics shop. 003.png 003.png (716.12 KiB) Viewed 54 times Once thats done its just a simple process of: - Bolting up the power steering pump. (from the M117 but rated to 82 bar) - Boling on and plumbing up the clutch slave (and just hoping the pin length is correct) - Fitting my AC compressor bracket, idler pulley. - Measuring, finding and fitting the belts. - Fitting one of the two fans (need to see which one fits.) - Installing the radiator and hoses. - Installing the oil cooler and hoses. - Wiring up the starter motor Once that's all done  in theory, all the work under the bonnet will be done and it will them be time to tackle dropping and flushing the fuel tank and then doing a full once over of all the fluids on the truck before its time to get the electrician and mechanic over and trying to fire this thing up after many many many years.
