New brakes

I am not too happy with the brakes on my 1992 300GE SWB. I know it's an overkill and they are indeed called killeraxles. Any good reasons for not doing it. 4-speed auto trans, 4.33 axles and 35x16" tires.

RE: New brakes

That are bolt on portals, they have nothing to do with brakes. Their purpose is to gain ground clearance (about 40 cm under the diffs).

(G with Tibus/GfG portals a.k.a. Killeraxles vs. a standart one).

They will be my new brakes. That is my story and I am sticking to it. At least that´s what I have told my wife!

And I DO get new disk brakes in the rear!

My concern is whether the reduction in gearing will be a problem at hwy speeds. Should I get a 5-speed tranny or change the transfer case to a 0,87. Changing T/C seem excessive to me, but if that´s what it takes I will start looking for one. My first plan is to change the transmission.

I do appreciate comments and suggestions.

Re: New brakes

The gear ratio inside the portals is like 1,15:1 I think. Don´t think it affects the highway speed that much. The LWB cabrio G280CDI on the picture was able of going 170 km/h+

BTW.do You want to put them on the 300GD or on the 300GE?

Re: New brakes

Arent those things like $20,000 for the kit? If all youre looking for is better brakes, you might save a lot of money just looking for brake upgrade kits.

You try convincing your wife that you need portal axles on your toy!

She does not need to know the cost.

Re: New brakes

Looks good!

No good reason not to upgrade your brakes.

A matter of family safety....

Portal axles

Can anyone tell me what my rpm`s will be at 60 mph (100 km/h) when i install the portals and 35" wheels?
Today, with 33" wheels I have 3400 rpm and 60 mph
The portals gives a reduction of 1.16 in order to compensate for the bigger tires. I believe the stock tires for the 300GE is approx 30.5". The gear reduction required should be 1.15 so 1.16 will give give some spare torque.

I initially thought I would need 4000 rpm at highway speeds (60 mph), but realise that i would be better off than my present setup. Can`t find a table that will show me the numbers.

Portals ordered

So the portals are on order and deposit paid. Will have them around March 1st, but won`t have them installed before May due to snowmobile season taking priority. Unless I manage to squeeze it in. Having them sitting in a box in the garage may be tough, though! Surely will keep you posted.

Re: New brakes

I love mine. They are on a 7,000lb plus camper and significantly enhanced the performance in several ways. You'll love them in every way.

You won't see an RPM reduction if you go with true 35's. My KO2's are 34 1/2" and I saw a couple hundred rpm increase at my top speed.

Make sure you adapt the rest of your brake system to be a disc/disc. That includes a new master cylinder (same as on a G500 or a 290gdT) and I believe you take out the check valve on the line going to the rear brakes. You'll also need longer brake lines.

Don't over tighten the small banjo fittings that lead to the remote portal reservoirs.

Also, pay close attention to the "clocking" of the rear portal box when you are setting up the rear axle and getting ready to weld on the rear flanges . At this point it is best to have the jack stands supporting the rear axle so the axle/body orientation is in its correct orientation during this clocking set up.

Ask Wolfgang for directions/tips on this. GFG won't be much help.

Enjoy!

Why not buy Porterfield Brake Pads? They are fantastic. Can you get vented rotors also?

I did not see your comments before I started or I would have checked with Wolfgang on the clocking of the rear portals. We spent some time on that but seem to have it right now.
You are dead right on GfG. Such lousy response and lack of support!
I'll look into the brake system and see if it needs any modification as you suggested.

Thanks

AFAIK GfG had some problems with their emails, first some spam attack, than a too sensitive spam protection. So better to call them. Daniel always answers the phone or calls back some whiles later...

You mean Tibus? Daniel Tibus? HE answers phone and email! GfG does not!
