U-Joint Rebuild?

Been having a clicking/clunking sound and at a little higher speeds get a squeal sound. The squeal sound only happens when I am pressing the gas pedal if that helps.

Shops believes its the U-Joint now after replacing my Steering dampener that was needing replaced regardless.

They want to take the U-Joint out to inspect next week and talked about a rebuild being around $1,200-$1,500.

I'm in the Phoenix area and was planning a trip to San Diego this weekend and am now feeling like I shouldn't even be driving the G if it truly is the U-Joint that needs rebuilt.

I have tried to look up info on U-Joints and all I can find is people talking about the 460's and I don't see anything on people having this trouble with 2002+ G's. I have about 148k on her atm if that helps and I honestly have no idea if my shafts have been serviced.

Any advice or experience would be great! Thank you

Would this be something I should try?

RE: U-Joint Rebuild?

Definitely try greasing it, also check for play in the U-joint itself. If the joint turns out to be shot, there should be much cheaper alternatives for replacing it. I recently had the rear U-joint go out on my W460 and bought a whole new driveshaft for under $700 from driveshaftcardan on ebay. Great quality and excellent prices. I also had a new yoke and joint put on the old one for ~$350. I don't know how different the driveshaft on a W463 is, but $1200-$1500 seems a bit much considering what I paid.

Re: U-Joint Rebuild?

I look at that link and it shows where to grease and even a adapter BUT it us basic people(maybe just me) it doesn't show "how" to grease them.

Any tips for doing this job without compressed air and such?

Here are a couple of alternatives. The smaller one holds less grease, but is ergonomically ideal for the flat cone shaped grease zerks on the G's driveshafts.

Adapter is not needed with the smaller one. The cone nozzle is already there.

Any good quality multipurpose grease is fine. I do NOT like the Redline grease, as it tends to separate upon sitting.

Re: U-Joint Rebuild?

Last question Dutch..

So I bought the grease gun. The auto store didn't have a smaller one so I got one that looks like the red one you posted. So my 2002 won't accept the "ZERK" fitting will it? I'll now need to find that cone adapter? Thanks

Nope, although you should check and top the grease level in the front axle swivel balls.

Check the DIY Forum. I'll bet that G-AMG has something there.

Re: U-Joint Rebuild?

Funny, I just greased my driveshafts today- was shocked to not see the spherical zirk fittings, but just so happened to have the conical adaptor from NAPA handy.

Very easy, don't have a lift, just slid under the truck. Note there are three ports that need grease on each shaft.

I would also suggest checking the boots on the center shaft- that could be causing your noise. Look for cracked or hard boots. I've been told by two people that the center shaft is best replaced, not rebuilt.

Re: U-Joint Rebuild?

The center shaft is easy to rebuild.  Crimping the seal requires some work.

The hard part is getting the shaft out and back in again.
