Back Up bulbs

Has anyone used a vled bulb for the back up bulb?

Do you think it would cause a bulb failure light if I changed to the led bulb?

RE: Back Up bulbs

Do G's have canbus reversing lights?

Canbus would show a defective bulb.

Has anyone a bulb out warning on a backup light?

Re: Back Up bulbs

CANBUS connected reverse lights? I would say yes, they are needed for safety and without being CANB, how would you know if the bulb is burnt. I think I've had messages for a license plate light out on the G but certainly on my MB sprinter. Unless these LED bulbs are cheap enough to chalk up as a waste of money, I wouldn't bother! The factory bulb and it's light output is projected by the shape of the interior reflector. LED's do not line up with this reflector. LEDs are bright and brighter when focused properly. With some draw measurements, you might be better off installing an LED light bar, as long as you do not exceed the CANBUS draw limits.

Re: Back Up bulbs

I put LED reverse lights in my 1999 G500, but it is a pre CAN BUS model
They work great.

Re: Back Up bulbs

I bought one from https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/tail-brake-turn/1156-can-bu... .

It is the canbus version. They have a good return policy.

I followed their instructions and pulled the bulb and drove about 50 feet and got the bulb out error. Definitely Canbus.

Hopefully have by end of week to test.

Re: Back Up bulbs

The one thing I don't like about CANBUS defeat circuitry is, you'll never know if the light is NOT working..unless the light output is soo good, you'll know when its not working.
Keep us posted?

Re: Back Up bulbs

Much brighter and spreads light further than the 1156. No error codes (yet).

The 1156 gets really really hot. LED no heat.a

Out of curiosity, why is the reflector not chromed?

Reflector is chromed to work as a reflector..note how the 1156 filament is oriented to send half of the element left and the other right. The LED is brighter looking at it for sure but not sure it reaches.

A better LED design for the 1156 bulb should look something like this paddle shape, if it's available.

Re: Back Up bulbs

I meant not chromed. Just black plastic. Is there anything reflective I can put in there to reflect light without getting it chromed?

Definitely much brighter and the spread of the light is improved dramatically.

Re: Back Up bulbs

I always use that aluminum sticky backed ducting tape. I just cut out the right shapes and sizes for the area to reflect and attach. Make a huge difference!
Try it?

I was thinking the same idea.

I am going to try a chrome wrap for $2.00. (not as permanent as duct tape)

Sorry, I miss read, "not chromed"..

 No CANBUS error, good job!

I have gotten used to the rear view camera and back up sensors..would love to toss some serious lumens at the same time.
