Transfer Box Noise

G'day All,

Over the weekend I noted a metallic clicking noise from under car which I initially thought may have been a dry UJ on the way out but after checking all the UJ temps they were all similar but what I did note was the transfer box it's temp seemed to a little warmer than usual for this time of year at around 85deg after a long fairly quick run cruising at 130kph, the output bearing temps on both sides of the box were even warmer at a bit over 90 deg which seems pretty warm. I am sure I have noted the box temp at around 85 deg after a long fast drive drive in the middle of summer but have never taken particular note of the output bearing temps.

I have just jacked the vehicle and when you rotate either prop shaft or the intermediate shaft there seems to be a metallic clicking sound coming from somewhere in the middle of the box and probably on the lower shaft which is where I also guess the CDL is located.

I need to buy some more oil prior to dropping and straining the oil and checking the mag plug for debris.

The box is not all that old with on 147000km on it and running Redline since I have owned it.

Has anyone had any similar occurances or experience, normally there is no positive outcome from a noise within a gearbox.

Re: Transfer Box Noise

Here is a thread with a 2000 G55 with TC issues, the box was rebuilt due to failure.
It is the same as my G500, I have no probs with mine and 132K miles so far. Best bet would be to drain the oil and look for metal.
If you decide to sell your truck, let me know.

RE: Transfer Box Noise

I just drained and filtered the oil in the transfer box and it was like it went in around 60 000km ago, no debris in the oil or notable build up on the mag plug other than a small bit of fir you you expect to see.

The noise seems to have gone quite again which is good and after checking the oil I am pretty confident the transfer box is now ok which is a relief.
