| G500 Cooling system preventative maintenance
Just wondering if I should proactively replace the thermostat and engine driven water pump when I do the hoses. 138k on the clock now with no cooling issues even though the viscous fan clutch is damp and the electric aux circulation pump is dead. What about the belt tensioner on a 2000?
I have ordered the electric pump(dead), viscous clutch(damp), motor mounts(shot), plugs(80k and no missing), valve cover resealing kit(wet and leaking), serpentine belt(fine), and a new K40 relay(piece of mind). My coil packs and plug wires look fine. It seems to be a good time to attack these parts while I'm half dissembled with the motor mounts.
Sorry, kind of long winded, am I missing anything?

Looks like you're being aggressively proactive, kind of like an airplane pilot might be. 
A good going over the K40 relay with a soldering iron would probably give you a like new one.
If I were going to change the belt tensioner, I would probably go with Karl's upgraded unit.
How about a new or rebuild on the center short drive shaft? Mounts on the TC? |

The new K40 is something i have put off for awhile, the current one is resoldered and will be my serviceable spare.
If I'm remembering correctly our pre mbusa tensioners/pulleys are not as susceptible to failure, Karl would know.
My rear engine/trans mount seems to be in good condition. I haven't checked the tc mounts.
My center shaft boots are in good condition, after the new rubber engine mounts and tune up if I have vibes that would be the likely culprit.
Might as well take your offer and do a compression check while I'm at it.

I read a lot about K40 relay, is that applies to 2004?
I currently have 178,000 miles, and I've replaced radiator hoses, thermostat with coolant drain/refill, serpentine belt, tensioner, idler pulley last year at 170,000
I've also replaced CPS, spark plugs as preventative maintenance although I had no symptoms of any fault involving any of these parts that I've replaced.
How do I check for coil packs and plug wires to see if I need replacements? |

The K40 does not apply to 2002 and newer.
If you have codes for misfire, rough idle, or fouled plugs on a cylinder I would investigate that coil pack and wires, otherwise an unscientific visual inspection is what I use.
Good call on the CPS, its recent and I have a spare and the tools.
Did you replace your thermostat preventative or because it was faulty?

There was no issue with thermostat, I just replaced it since I was replacing the hoses anyway. I think it's a no brainer and $20 well spent.
I'm not sure if I've gotten lucky or not, but I really didn't have any issue for the last two years I've own this truck.
Even with 178,000 miles, it still drives like new and it looks new in and out. |

Update on progress.
I ordered every rubber hose under the hood minus the NLA ones. The two that pass through the firewall to the heater core looked to be in good condition and an ordeal to change out but those two hoses can be cut to size and replace the small NLA ones. The thermostat, housing and viscous fan clutch were replaced. The worst ones to access are the lower radiator hose, Take off the fan shroud, and the heater core to engine, below the throttle body, just hard to get at.
Once it gets running I'll report back on Audi aux coolant pump and VW temperature switch. They required minimal modifications and were fractionally priced.
Wish me luck, back out to the sweat box to attack the motor mounts.
