Front axle housing ring

Hi G-uys,

just a quick question, what is the function of the ring- part nr. 62? Is it a plain bearing and the shaft turns inside or does it have just some protective function?

Thx in advance.

RE: Front axle housing ring

It's a bushing that is pressed into the axle tube. It supports the half axle shaft in the axle tube, and it is subject to wear over time.

Re: Front axle housing ring

Indeed it's some kind of bronze bushing that is pressed into the axletube.

Not sure if it Always supports the axleshaft or that's there for failsafe when wheelbearings of swivel ball bearings fail.

Re: Front axle housing ring

It's an OIL SEAL centering support of the axle that is rarely needed, unless under extreme loads. Prevents the shaft from exceeding movement that could destroy the differential oil seal, IMO.
Just rebuilt my steering knuckle's using FourbyFour master rebuild kit. In the kit I received these bushings and replaced them..the old bushings didn't show much wear at all.
I would say, if the knuckle's where shimmed correctly, these bushings should show little to no wear and do not need to be replaced..again, IMO.

It's an OIL SEAL

Actually #65 is the oil seal. #62 is a bushing in there to be sure that the half axle doesn't wear out the oil seal.

Re: Front axle housing ring

^
After 120.000 miles, my bushings had little to no wear marks (replaced just the same), the CV boots, within the knuckle where totally shoot though!
All new factory bearings, bushings, oil seals, CV boots, solid factory knuckle wiper seal and grease, brake pads, brake rotors, differential oil, flush of the differential shift fluids, so on and so on.
Took several evenings and $2000 in parts..Done!!

RE: Front axle housing ring

My bushings had wear so I changed them when I did the seals. Mileage is unknown.

Re: Front axle housing ring

If there is wear on the bushing it is a sign that the swivel housing is not correctly shimmed or wheel bearings are loose.
When this happens the axle rises and rides on the bushing and the weight of the truck is carried through the CV joint
and causes it to break. Under normal circumstances this bushing should have no wear.
