722.610 Automatic Transmission Does not Switch to and through the Lower 4-3-2-1 Speeds

Hello,
I am having a problem with my 722.610 automatic transmission floor shifter. It Does not Switching to and through the Lower 4-3-2-1 Positions/Speeds.
I can easily switch from P to R - N - and the D. The car is driving fine on D. I am usually never using the Lower 4-3-2-1 Speeds, but yesterday I tried to switch the floor shifter to 4 and could not do it - it did not want to move from the D position. I need it to work properly because I am planning on towing a trailer long distance.
So I will greatly appreciate your help in this matter.
I have 1999 G320 with W463.233 V6 engine and 722.610 automatic transmission.
Thank you

Most likely crud has fallen into the mechanism.  It isn't that hard to take out and clean up.

There is a screw that holds the wood surround in place that is accessed from the transfer case shifter hole.  Then there is a spring clip that holds the shifter lever to the rod that goes to the transmission (under the truck).  Get new grommets for both ends of that rod, I assure you they are trashed.

A2029920010 Collared bushing for shifter rod
A2109920010 Bushing on transmission end of gear selector rod
A0009944160 Clip for transmission rod ends

At that point you can just unbolt and take it apart for cleaning.

Thank you so very much.
Will work on it this weekend, and will post a result.

Yes, that happened to me and very common on 722.6 shifters. They seize up on the mechanism. All you need to do is take out the shifter mechanism and give it a thorough clean and greasing.

Sounds like a job for Kroil.

Hardly.  There are plastic bits and circuitry in there that might not take kindly to the aggressive solvents in Kroil or any un-stickum spray.  This calls for disassembly, cleaning and re-assembly with silicone paste.

I stand corrected. Good to know! I thought it was all mechanical linkages! My mistake.

Re: 722.610 Automatic Transmission Does not Switch to and through the Lower 4-3-2-1 Speeds

I have ordered pars suggested by “AlanMcR” (thank you very much). It looks like they are going to arrive some time next week. Also I’ve been researching this online and on WIS, and according to WIS after removing and then reinstalling the floor shifter, there is going to be an error code, which has to be erased – “After installing the floor shift, read out and erase the fault code using the HHT refer to DM Chassis Volume 1 – Index 0.” I will post the process and progress when I will get to it…

Re: 722.610 Automatic Transmission Does not Switch to and through the Lower 4-3-2-1 Speeds

As long as the ignition is off, you won't get any new codes from the swap.  Most likely there are already codes there.  These shifters frequently cause silent faults of:

018 Selector Lever Improbable

114 Sporadic Selector Lever Improbable

The way the lever works is that only PRND is mechanically transmitted by the rod.  4321 is transmitted electrically with a digital pattern on several wires.  There are only so many patterns that are valid, the rest trigger this error.  When the contact plate gets dirty incorrect patterns get sent.  This usually clears up by itself as the contacts self clean certain extent as the shifter is moved.

Re: 722.610 Automatic Transmission Does not Switch to and through the Lower 4-3-2-1 Speeds

My shifter started acting up around the same time. Early May. I thought it was temporally related to accidentally dumping most of a cup of coffee on the center console/shifter area a week or so earlier.

Then the following week, I had problems with the trans not shifting out of 1st gear in D mode. Weird.
Unfortunatly I was involved in an accident with the truck and am just getting it fixed up.

I replaced the shifter console today, and the brand new shifter from the dealer is not shifting normally either. I noticed that the shifter comes with a new bushing installed and am thinking that my issues may be more related to the bushing at the transmission end of the shift rod.

I have just spent an hour plus adjusting the shift rod without any improvement. Seems like it has some play at the trans end too.

The electrical plugs on the shifter looked pretty clean and uncontaminated by the coffee spill.

Any chance the electrical plug on the tranny is leaking and that ATF has wicked up the cable to the control unit? It's a known and common issue with the 722.6 5-speed.

I'm not sure where my 1999 G500 transmission control unit is. I thought the shifter was connected directly to the trans, electrically and mechanically.

I don't see any weeping at the plug on the transmission body though.

The TCU is #32 in the Apparatus Case under the hood. For my 2000 G500 the P/N is A.023.545.52.32. See attached.
