Any advice will be much appreciated.

That affects the parts and options. Have you seen this? https://www.g-wagenaccessories.com/collections/exhaust-parts-adapter... These parts all bolt together an I have replaced much of my own OEM system without going to a pipe shop. A custom welded exhaust will be another matter.

Get rid of that heavy and complex mess of pipes above the rear axle too. Appreciate any leads on what mufflers could be used to replicate the AMG's = not too loud, buy rumbly...

Sounds pretty good. Still going to fix it, however..

Just put in straight pipe in place or does it dump on both sizes now? I kept my stock mufflers, and cats, and added 2 bullet mufflers between the last cat and the stock muffler. Then I cut away everything behind the factory mufflers including the cross over. Now it just has 2 simple stainless steel turn downs. Sounds the same as a new G. If you wanted to make it silly loud you could just do 2 turn downs after stock mufflers but its too much. 2 stainless bullet mufflers will tone it down and it at the same volume of a new G.

Mine with stock mufflers, stock cats, and 2 added bullets is not discernible from the new models. I only did it to get rid of the disgusting bundle of snakes that were back over the axle. It was noisy and clanky after 14 years.

They really shouldn't be able to cut down the sound that much. They are probably clogged. Agreed. When I only replaced the mid-muffler on my 2000 G500 with the diesel motor straight pipe, the sound changed from quiet to "Deep Throat"; and I had left the cats and the rear muffler in place.

Usually the back up is enough to give improper readings to upstream O2 sensors and cause check engine lights. So long as the engine hasn't had running issues and has had the opportunity to get to running temperature for adequate periods, your cats are more likely to have internal media damage and make terrible noise over any clogging. None of the previous statements can be applied to diesel cats.

Sound is great around town with a nice aggressive rumble at startup and part throttle. At full throttle everyone knows you're getting on it but it isn't nascar loud. Sounds slightly louder to a G550 with sport exhaust but not obnoxious. There is very little drone on the highway at 70mph though it gets a bit more intrusive around 75-80mph (turning closer to 3k rpm). Cost was around $500 though another shop quoted closer to $700. I kept the factory parts if a new owner down the line wants it reinstalled. Edited by Brent95m3 6/16/2017 4:56 PM

Dutch- is that the muffler over the rear axle you removed? Yes. There is a diesel exhaust pipe that is a drop in replacement for that mid-muffler. I'm sure that Sean or Vlad can get it for you. I'm pretty sure that it's P/N: A.463.490.00.21; but check with one of them to be sure.

Brent, you have achieved a level of beauty on "Your" 2002 Gwagen. Great job! Now let us see the exhaust system you put in place. Is that a backup camera I see above the rear window? Here are a couple photos, it has been raining so the G is a little dirty. Also here is a short video. Thanks Gerald! I appreciate the compliment. Yes, I added the backup camera in the OEM location with an OEM style mount. It is still terrible even mounted up high as the tire blocks half the view (same as the OEM camera does). Check the youtube link below for the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkg3ALljv0c&feature=youtu.be Edited by Brent95m3 6/26/2017 3:47 PM
