Re: Tibus Portals

Dave G.
Thanks for your comments. Based on what you write I´m sure we have very different driving pattern or we drive in very different terrain. I do not know what it takes to bend an axle tube but I can see that speed, jump or drop could cause it! But I never imagined that this was a widespread problem. I will certainly keep it in mind when I venture into the wilderness.

The portals are being used in Trophy races in Russia and central Europe but I do not know what precautions, if any, the drivers take. I can see that they are vulnerable to sudden impact but that kind of abuse is beyond my driving pattern.

I would think that a slight disturbance of the front end geometry will be more noticeable with portal axles and I can confirm that wheel balance and toe-in has to be perfect for high speed driving. So far I have tested two sets of wheels that worked perfectly before the conversion but they both had to be rebalanced after. The toe-in also required re-adjustment. Having said that, the car now drives incredibly well and on tarmac I feel much more comfortable at higher speed than before. (My reference to high speed is 60-70 mph or 100-120 kph)

But only time and milage will proof whether this is a wise way to go.

Re: Tibus Portals

Oddvar,
Dave G. is right regarding bent axle tubes, primarily the long side, being a concern. I once bought four Wolf 461 front axles that were drop out units from German military training in Canada. I expect they are subjected to harder than normal useage and understandably they are replaced rather than repaired.
I stripped them down and took them to a machine shop that specializes in hydraulic cylinder repair and had all four axle housings straightened. Attached are photos of the part they made up to check for and confirm straightness. I still have that part as well as most of the axle parts if anyone is interested.

Re: Tibus Portals

Thank you, Jim.

I do have a 460 that I mostly use at off road events and occasionally abuse in the wilderness so the info you share may become useful one day.
