New member here, but a familiar 2002 G500

Hello everyone! I wanted to introduce myself and my G I bought from Matt and that was formerly Gerald's. The transaction with Matt was incredibly smooth and I had it shipped to Austin from Salem with no issues. Gerald fortunately took incredible care of it and I have a stack of paperwork with nearly all the maintenance records. I've made this my daily driver and have done a few things to update the look and feel to a more modern G. Here is a list of the few things I've done to it:

20" AMG Wheels with 275/55/20 BFG K02 tires
Updated Android Navigation with 7" screen, bluetooth, apps, etc.
Xenon headlights with LED DRL
Magnaflow Exhaust
Updated 2009+ Grille

I'm doing a few more updates but going for an OEM or OEM+ look so it looks like it came out of the factory.

Attached are a few photos taken recently.

Re Brent,
You are correct, That is one great G 500.
To tell you the truth, I have wished many times over that I had it back.
I see that the AMG wheels have been changed.
It looks great.
You will get many looks from passerby's.
PM me and I'll tell you the about the maintenance program.
I hope you enjoy driving the G as much as I did.
Gerald

That looks great! I normally dont like anything bigger than a 18" wheel on the G, but your wheels actually look really good.

It is one of the eBay units with an android 6.0 operating system. You can use the W203 C class head unit. I didn't like the aftermarket route (Alpine, Kenwood, etc.) as I wanted it to look OEM which this accomplishes. This unit also gives me bluetooth functionality, plus I can install Waze (traffic navigation app) and Spotify for music.

Really good looking G.

I was always vehemently against the newer grill and wheels but in the past couple years I've softened up. Its time I give my old girl a little cleaning and updating.

Could you post a link to the eBay headunit? That should be my first change because the stock command is no longer my favorite lol.

Oh and the headlights...any warning lights pop up on the screen since you changed them?

This is the one I purchased. It is plug and play, and as long as you're good enough with an android phone you should be fine. It has the standard radio and plays CDs too. The factory navigation is also pretty good, though I usually use Waze.

Thank you. I will be copying you on this. My new G550 style hidden exhaust has put the wind in my sails to get a couple things I am starting to dislike fixed. Radio is the first to go. I think that means a whole lot of stuff under the seats may be able to be removed but I am not 100% on that yet.

RE: New member here, but a familiar 2002 G500

Ran a wire from the battery terminals in the engine bay and then ran the wiring along the OEM wires.

RE: New member here, but a familiar 2002 G500

For what it's worth, I found that the best place to take off power for the LED DRL's is at the power feed for the coolant circulation pump. This is powered when the engine is running and off when it's stopped. The coolant pump for the M113 G500s is on the right inside fender well so access is easy and you don't need to penetrate the firewall. I soldered the wires at the connector, but a splice tap type connector will work also. The only negative to this method is that the DRLs will come on if you use the "rest" or residual heat function, but that's probably not a big deal for most.

Brent - very nice G!

I'm curious as to why Brent did not open the fuse panel on the left side of the dash and connect there.

That is a good tip on the day time running lights.

Did you have any error codes with the headlights?

Re: New member here, but a familiar 2002 G500

I've recently installed similar, if not the same, Xenon headlights from Depo, and they are plug and play with no error code.

Re: New member here, but a familiar 2002 G500

The kit I bought had taps already set up to run wire off the battery terminals. Seemed like the most direct route with no splicing and there is a fuse in the wire already.

Also, the headlights don't throw any error codes and work great. I did have to aim them, which took as much time as installing them. For ~$400 I get modern day bi xenon aesthetics and functionality. The LED DRL were a bit more on top of that.
