17 inches steel wheels?

Hi,

I recently bought a G290 which came with 235/85 R16 tires on steel wheels. I'm shopping for tires and I thought I would increase the rim size to 17 inches and reduce the thickness of the tire. But it seems almost impossible to find 17 inches steel wheels that would fit on a G. I have searched all over the web and the only sizes I found are 16 and 17.5. I do believe that those exists however, see page 5 of this link (French or German only):
https://issuu.com/brabusg36/docs/mercedesg_g280cdi_worker

It states that the g280CDI worker came with 16 or 17 inches wheels. This is the only mention I ever found so I'm starting to doubt it and thought I would ask here.

Thanks!

Why would you want to do that? Most G owners like to reduce the metal and increase the rubber! It gives a MUCH better ride.

RE: 17 inches steel wheels?

It is an economic solution to a cosmetic issue

I don't like the look of the 85 ratio. So it seems my options are:

1) Get bigger wheels to reduce the ratio (cheap if I can find 17 inches steel wheels)
2) Get wider tires and reduce the ratio. This is expensive because I need to buy alloy wheels, wider tires and flares.

I am considering option 2, I really like the look of 16 inches Ashtaroth wheels and flares but the wheels are around 700$ each!

Re: 17 inches steel wheels?

I am pretty sure 17 inch wheels were never a factory option on a G. All G280CDI Station Wagons (civilian or military) used either 16 inch steel wheels or 16 inch alloys.

There were only also 17.5s steel wheels on the 3,4m wheelbase pickups which came with truck tires with high load index. But tires for such wheels are hard to find and expensive (like 300 euro I think).

AFAIK the only 17 inch wheels for the G were some Brabus alloys in the early 90s but they were made in tiny numbers and I guess they will be impossible to find and crazy expensive...

RE: 17 inches steel wheels?

Viking-offroad sells a really nice 17" forged alloy wheel. It deserves consideration.

RE: 17 inches steel wheels?

Thanks guys. After all the research I've done I'm also pretty convinced that 17 inches steel wheels isn't an option. If they ever existed (I doubt) they are impossible to find. I had not even seen any alloy ones such as the ones found on viking off road but I guess I was focused on steel wheels.

Another option is to use wider 16 inches steel wheels to reduce the ratio and get similar thickness. I read that pinzgauer wheels may fit on a G and they are 16x6.5. I saw them for sales but I didn't like their look so I didn't dig much on this.

I think I have to consider alloy wheels or live with what I have.
