Background: I noticed that car feels strange at highway and after inspection I saw that brakedisc hits the caliper.. I removed hub creasecap and two nuts and locking washer dropped to ground It seems that local service has forgotten lock the nut after replacing or adjusting bearings.. I drove about 200 kilometers with loose bearings.. Anyway, I removed hub and checked that outer bearings and hub seems to be ok. Inner bearing looks also fine but there is some movement up-down position and I am wondering is that ok? BR Tommi

Please go into your My Profile and complete the sections to tell us the year and model of your G, as well as where you're located. That information helps us to get to know and to help you better answer your questions. Up and down movement is not acceptable, but you need to install and torque the nuts properly before checking for movement.

After hub is installed and pretorqued there is no play.. I mean that without hub inner bearing has little radial play and I am wondering is that ok?

After hub is installed and pretorqued there is no play.. I mean that without hub inner bearing has little radial play and I am wondering is that ok? I torque the inner nut to 200 Nm while turning the wheel or hub. Then back it off 1/8 of a turn. Place the lock washer and torque the outer nut to 200 Nm. Bend the locking tabs on the locking washer into the notches on the outer nut. Replace the grease cap. This is not how it is described in the WIS. I was given this method by the head Europa Int'l tech several years ago; and it has worked for me. Do this at your own risk.

You can tighten it as described, but the damage to the bearings may already be done. Also, depending on how old they are, the king pin bearings may also need to be replaced. Worn king pin bearings will make itself evident by an increase in up/down looseness. Distinguishing between looseness caused by king vs. wheel bearings is challenging, usually both are at fault.

I think that I cant explain myself clear Bearing looks fine, also hub.. No visible damage there.. I have studied joint housing more and looks like driveshaft push inner bearing out and hub push outer bearing in and hub nut tightens bearing play to tolerance.. Therefore it is okay to have radial play in inner bearing when hub is not in place because without hub driveshaft doesnt push inner bearing to outer race in joint housing.. Little hard to explain what I mean, because english isnt my native language

My guess would be none, as any adjustment needed would be as a result of bearing rollers and/or race wear. Personally, even if MB does have an interval, I would replace them if there is any play.

Still the same bearings, no adjustment done and no play to be felt Oskar
