Door Lock Problems...

Hope someone can help with a problem I haven't been able to solve...

My driver door lock will not stay locked, nor does it lock the passenger door. I have a 1991 G-Wagon convertible and door locks have never functioned correctly.

When I use the key from outside to lock the door, the lock knob goes down but then within 1-2 seconds, comes back up. Also the passenger door lock will not go down.

I saw the string about the bad solder joints in the lock relay so I ordered a new relay and installed it tonight. Problem is same as before...

Any advice anyone?

Attached is a 6 second video (assuming we can attach video) which shows the functional problem

RE: Door Lock Problems...

The OP sent the video to me. When he locks the driver's door by turning the key (not the remote) in the door handle lock, the lock knob goes down, but pops right back up. He says he replaced a relay (K40?) to no avail. Could it be a defective locking motor?

Thoughts?

RE: Door Lock Problems...

Just in case you didn't see this thread and replaced the K40 and not the Lock Relay. However, not sure if this part is applicable to your G.

Re: Door Lock Problems...

Sounds like the actuator in the driver door. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but does it not act as the master of the system?

That is the system telling you that the driver's door is open.   Figure out why it thinks the door is open.  Pre-MBUSA that was a switch on the door frame.  MBUSA, that is a switch in the door lock mechanism.  Could also be the wire from the switch as it goes through the hinge area.

Re: Door Lock Problems...

Sounds like a failed master lock actuator in the driver door. I have seen this exact thing in VW T3. Sometimes they go up and down repeatedly as well.

Yeah, I did forget about the special switch in the driver's door lock actuator.  Not sure what happens when that fails.

DUTCH - 2/7/2018 10:54 AM Is there any chance that this problem could be connected to the Burglary Alarm and Infrared Closing System? There is a separate control unit for this system; and I'll bet that its interconnected to the locking system somehow. Also, what if that under hood closed switch was not working? Could one or both of these make that door knob pop back up after locking with the key?
No thoughts on these ideas?

As far as I know the system only insists that the driver's door is closed when it is being locked.  The hood switch is easy to unplug as a test.  Really there is no problem with just unplugging that switch permanently.  It is identical to the door switches.  I view that switch as a mounted spare part for the doors.

Re: Door Lock Problems...

The driver door actuator in my old 460 was removed when I got it. I’m thinking the PO probably experienced this same issue with the lock popping up so they removed the actuator.

Does the door stay locked if the button is pushed down from the inside?

Re: Door Lock Problems...

Open all the doors, Manually turn down the closing mechanism at the end of each door. Then try the lock knob again.
The 3 locks on a cabrio are the 2 doors and gas filler port.

Re: Door Lock Problems...

Appreciate all the input and sorry I didn’t respond sooner. Was a Little out-of-Pocket the past couple of days.

I believe Alan McR theory is on right track. Something is telling the door lock that the car can’t be locked. Either open circuit or something else... will continue to work down this path this weekend.

Will try manually turning down lock on each door to see if that does anything...

I tried replacing the door actuator mechanism on driver door (was first part I replaced) but that didn’t fix it. I could even manually push down the lock on actuator and it would pop back up.

Re: Door Lock Problems...

Glad to hear you are back in-the-pocket
If you have replaced the driver's door actuator, that rules out the main culprit. I know the doors will lock if the passenger door is open. Perhaps it is the driver's door pin switch as Alan suggested. Not sure that the hood closure switch would do this, more of an alarm issue (pushing interior door lock button down rules out this system).

The other main culprit is the Kiekert alarm relay. It is mounted behind the glove box on my 1995 G320. Not cheap, but it did fix some different locking issues on my car.
