The transfer case acted as if it were in neutral as drive and reverse did not work (nor did park). I turned the engine off and on and pushed the Lo/Hi several times, and it ended up back in Lo range. I limped back to the trail head, tried again to get into Hi to no avail. Back at camp I let it rest a few hours, and it transferred from Lo to Hi no problems and have cycled from Hi to Lo and back a few times with no problems. Anyone else aver have this problem? I am new to the G's as a long time Land Cruiser owner so I'm looking for ideas. Many thanks for any help.

Even if it seems to be working fine, it probably stored a code that the dealer's STAR/XENTRY system could read. Is your fluid level OK?

I still speak Land Cruiser, am learning my G-Wagen quickly! Will ask about fluids. I appreciate the response.

Not likely related to fluids. It seems the transfer case control module loses the position sense of the shifter and error codes out. This happened on my 2002 on a couple occasions. The answer is to do as you did. Power cycles an d reengage shifting action. Some times motor needs replacement or wire harness under neath is damaged so check the wiring. In my 02 it was a faulty control module, common in 2002-2003 models. Now I have TC shifter lever in my 1998, always works

In most cases, it is a communication error between the control unit and the motor - wiring harness connection problems. BTW the shift motion needs to be normalized, so the control unit remembers, how often the motor has to turn, to shift from low to high and back. Star system or holding the control switch down for 10 sec longer, pass the successful shift......
