Transmission Fluid Change Questions

Hi,
Although I've already done transmission fluids change before, I have a few question regarding it.
1. How do I know if my truck has drain plug on torque convertor?
2. Can I just loosen the valve body bolts to drain more fluids and faster?(I've seen people doing it on BMW)
3. Do I need to replace the electrical connector every time I change transmission fluids?
Thank you in advance for your answers, as always.

1.) It does NOT.
2.) I would not.
3.) Why? If it's not leaking, leave it alone. You do not need to remove it to change the ATF.

Replace that connector every time you drop the pan. Its less than $10 and when it leaks you get fluid into the harness and may not notice or see it - and it probably won't leak onto the ground. You won't be dropping the pan more often than every 30,000 miles so just spring for the connector and know its good and not wicking fluid into an expensive and difficult to clean/replace harness.

Re: Transmission Fluid Change Questions

You may have a drain plug on the torque converter. It disappeared sometime in 1999 and came back in the early/mid 2000s. I can't recall exactly when it happened but 2004 is probably pretty close. If I was doing the job I'd rotate the torque converter and look. It's much better to do the job with the complete flush. I wouldn't drop the pan unless you are changing the conductor plate (which IMO is a wear/maintenance item that should be done probably every other fluid change). I wouldn't replace the electrical plug unless leaking or doing the conductor plate.

How can you change the filter without dropping the pan?

Duh...I'll blame a senior moment - don't forget the filter! Although I've never seen anything in the filter or on the pan magnet even with poor looking fluid..

Re: Transmission Fluid Change Questions

So... I have owned a G now for a year and honestly fairly new to Automatic transmissions.

mb230s
what is a conductor plate and why should it be replaced.

Anyone have a write up? But I assume I need to
clean it well
drop the pan
replace the filter
replace the conductor plate and filter

unsure how I drain out the rest to the system

fill ......... The dipstick I have seems to go in and stop but still has a bunch stilling out. Normal?
Do I check in park or drive? seems to have temp marks fairly explanatory.

Thanks
David

Re: Transmission Fluid Change Questions

The conductor plate problem on the 722.6 transmissions is well documented all over the internet. It's pretty much a "wear" part that has to be replaced, and it is specific to both trucks and sedans using this transmission.

A few educational videos on the topic:

Re: Transmission Fluid Change Questions

The original conductor plates certainly cracked and needed to be replaced.  I was under the impression that the replacements were designed slightly differently so that the conductive tracks don't crack in the same way.  Have you had the replacement fail?
