G500 coolant antifreeze

I read about the stuff that Mercedes recommends.

But I live in Mexico an the only good liquids we have are tequila and beer

What common brand (AutoZone) coolant can I use in my G500?

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

Zerex G-05 is good stuff. The most current fluid is G-20 and is blue. I'm guessing any difference is extremely minor but is the current recommendation.

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

Karl is not able to bring anything this time

Amazon Mexico wants for the 3 gal of 50/50 Zerex G05 $160

I will ask the local Mercedes dealer (we have one now that the Mexicans are getting wealthy)
wonder how much they are asking

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

1,557 Pesos for 1 gal
need 2 = 3,114 Pesos
plus 700 Pesos shipping = 3,814 Pesos
makes $US 190 at today's exchange rate

not a good deal for antifreeze

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

Harald,

Here is a link that addresses three variables (water to coolant ratio, and pressure cap [ours are 100bPA approx 14.5 PSI]) as it relates to boiling point. https://durathermfluids.com/pdf/techpapers/pressure-boiling-point.pd... Mercedes recommends 50/50 for the anticorrosion properties but you can go with less coolant with more frequent flush and fill cycles.

MB Coolant specs: https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_310_1.pdf

Also, just some random thoughts as I do not know what schedule pressures there are:

1. MB 325 lists one product made/distributed in Mexico: Antifreeze Long Life NF-300 Raloy Lubricantes, S.A. de C.V., Santiago Tianguistenco/MEXICO

2. If the antifreeze you removed from the cooling system is still available, you could pour it back in and top off with distilled water. Then when the "good" new stuff finds its way to you, it is a simple flush and fill.

3. A long time ago, MB identified Anticorrosion agent additive that could be used when not using antifreeze. Per the second link you might be able to use Havoline Xtended Life Inhibitor https://cglapps.chevron.com/msdspds/PDSDetailPage.aspx?docDataId=382... at a ratio of 90/10 (water/inhibitor). It does look like they are now limiting it their OM engines.

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

lowest price I could find for Zerex G05 on MercadoLibre (a Mexican version of Amazon) was $45 for 1 gal
I need 2 = $90

went to the local Mercedes store (you won't believe the exploding middle class in Mexico)
they have the original MB fluid in 1.5 liter bottles for $16 ea
I need 4 = $64
not everything at MB is priced out of your range

now I'll have to put everything together

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

Got to love those old low tech 460`s. 4 liters of Prestone pure antifreeze (8 litres when mixed) 12,95 at any
parts store.
These days we need a course in Antifreeze and auto. transmission oils, even motor oils to service our vehicles and
then pay through the nose for their spect`d products. A lot of it is just marketing bullshit.

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

^^^Isn't that the truth!
Since owning a MB..I've suddenly became afraid to do any service without proper fluid specs.....
In the past..any antifreeze worked!
MB has us over thinking every fluid used, as if it was under warranty.
Coming from a german...so german!!!

Re: G500 coolant antifreeze

For some time now, here in South Africa, Mercedes Anti-freeze has been the cheapest of all, including Autozone. For a few years their MB229.5 engine oil too, was even cheaper than Castrol Magnatec but a recent heavy price hike has now put it on a par with other brands.

My philoshopy: always check prices with MB first.
